Could you maybe talk a bit about cerebral magic vs. visual? You're magic seems to be mentalism based and happen within the spectators mind vs. visual changes and flash.
Do you have a reason you tend to lean toward mentalism with cards? You've done visual routines (Black Hole for example) but today it seems you lean more towards that cerebral style. |

Shawn,
When I first started creating magic for the first time I was mainly looking for table/restaurant magic. That was my main avenue of performing and I needed to be concise and visual and have multiple climaxes that I could end on if need be or have one trick strong enough in case I could only do one. As I stopped performing table magic and my venue became more relaxed I started wanting to explore the mentalist side of magic. In my experience doing the best color change or something else visual does not hold a candle to the impact a center tear or a peeked card reveal has on spectator. When you have them convinced you can possibly read minds you not entertaining them you are changing their view of reality. That might sound deep but those who do the mental magic stuff know what I am talking about, you see it on the spectators face. A sense of wonderment and complete shock. There was NO WAY you could have known what they were “thinking” yet you nailed it. It was these reactions that drove me away from visual magic and to start exploring the Cerebral side. Ryan |
