Look for flag companies on line. Silk flags are not made very large. Rice's largest was about 4' x 6' and they have not been made in years. Harry Blackstone's Jr. was custom made and not of silk. Silk compresses but it is not going to hold up for a lot of use without some reinforcement.
Use a nylon flag and then work on your production. With a snow storm, you have all the cover in the world. It could even be flown in from a fly line. Richard

Ha! It brings to mind that old story of Harry Sr. when he was doing the VANISING NORSE trick. (I certainly wasn't there, and I don't know how true it may be, but I'll tell it anyway.)
The horse was brought onstage, and almost immediately, it relieved itself, somewhat copiously!. A loud voice was heard from the gallery: "OK magician! Let's see you make THAT disappear!" I can readily imagine that with a llama, camel and elephant, such a problem could occur. Although, most animal handlers know about watering or feeding before the show!!! I was visiting a circus (an indoor show) a few years ago. The young man (newly hired) apparently was not told: "Don't water or feed the elephants BEFORE the show.) Three elephants were the final act. The ring curbs were set on the concrete floor. About the middle of the act, one of the bulls "decided" that she had to get rid of that water. She did. It was like ten bathtubs being tipped over. The other two bulls decided to "join" their sister! The ring was now ankle deep! The poor guy who was presenting the act, had to finish the routine. Thankfully, it was the final act, and the show was "all out and all over"! I don't know how the prop boys made THAT disappear! Rabbits and doves "aint" so bad!!!

Many years ago Hans Klok performed the vanishing elephant.
Kenia the elephant was with her trainer Lutz Freiwald (from Germany) at the location. Freiwald had learned his elephants (2 at that time) a very important "trick". About 20 minutes before their action time in the show, on a place outside the theater, he gave the animal a free(!) walk. After a few minutes he commanded: "Scheisse!" (shit) and the elephant walked to a large piece of plastic on the ground and did what she had to do. Then they walked together into the building, to perform with Klok their fabulous illusion. |

When I did theatre shows for children'family shows, I'd finish the first half with a parasol/flagstaff production.
The idea was to fill the stage with colour fairly quickly building to the climax which was the flagstaff production. I had two Magic Hands flagstaffs, each flag being six foot square and very brightly coloured. The company was based in Germany and run by Manfred Thumm, now well retired. The two flagstaffs were set on the floor where the last parasol would be placed and thus easy to pick up. Holding both together, fling them out, so it looks like one giant flag has appeared, then spread your hands, so a second appears. Looks amazing and I think I got the idea from the Nelson Downs section of the Faucett Ross book. I'd be in front and explain that we were about to do the Presto trick, and it was called that because the word we mustn't say is 'Presto'. Usually some child would call out 'Presto'. Whether they did or didn't, I'd continue with, "You'd better not call out 'Presto' or I'll stop you going to school tomorrow." (That is an Eric Sharp gag and ensures the audience will keep calling 'Presto' with enthusiasm and gusto). The front cloth would open showing a bare stage apart from the production box for the parasols. The Radetzky March was playing and getting louder as the children shouted 'Presto', me getting flustered as more parasols kept appearing and filling the stage with colour, eventually the flagstaffs. A nice finish to the first half. At the recent FISM 2012 in Blackpool an Asian company was selling Flagstaffs and I think the size was 6'x4'. |

From Bill Pitts, I obtained a vintage silk flag. It is not marked as to maker. It is MUCH larger than the 4' x 6' size Hughes mentioned that Rice made. To be a bit more precise, it is 5.5' x 7'7' , or 75% larger. Very old, but still 50 stars. ANybody ever seen this size, or have any idea as to maker ?

There were actually two of these gigantic silk flags in Bill's collection...almost identical They are both the same size. I got one - my magic friend got one. Mine is not marked, but the one that my friend procured is marked Silk King Studios. On close examination I noticed that it was two pieces seamed together.

My two brass flagstaffs were from Abbott's and were made for 6' x 6' sunburst silks. I'm sure J Neal is still doing his spectacular routine that concludes with that massive double flagstaff production that fills the stage. I think his were from Abbott's as well although he custom makes his flags.

Ray!
Perfect timing... To wish you a Happy New Year! Yes, I am still waving those flags in venues across the world. They are also Abbott's Staves with Custom Silks. Of course, they are a lot pricier than when we bought ours...

I would suggest that if you are planning to use the large Rice flag that you have a reinforcement strip of cloth sewn on the edges that attaches to the flagstaff. if you are producing it by the corner, put reinforcement tabs there. They are great silks but the constant strain on those areas can cause them to eventually fail.
I remember working with Bill in Reno at the IBM and at Abbott's when Ruth and he produced the flags. Glad they have a good home. Last time I talked with Bill, he was having some memory problems. I hope he is going ok. Richard

Well there is nothing like taking the 'Mickey' out of your own tricks by giving them a derogatory title.
