Perhaps his epitaph will read:
The man who broke Ali's jaw RIP, Jawbreaker. |

Not only broke his jaw, in my opinion he beat Ali 3 times. You might give the second fight to Ali, but Norton was definitely robbed in the third fight. RIP

The 70s were perhaps the best decade for heavyweight boxing, and after Ali, Foreman, and Frazier, the next name on the list is Norton's. He was a great boxer who could easily have had a decent reign as world champion in another era, had he not had to compete with three all-time greats. He arguably won all here Ali fights, and was only the second man to defeat Ali. He's also the answer to an interesting trivia question: Who was the only heavyweight champion to never win a title fight? His victory over Jimmy Young was supposed to earn him a title fight against Leon Spinks, but when Spinks opted to defend against Ali, instead, the WBC stripped Spinks of the title and named Norton the champ, by virtue of his win over Young. Norton then lost the title in his first defense in an all-time great heavyweight fight, against Larry Holmes, narrowly missing being the first person to beat Holmes. And I do mean narrowly - after 14 rounds, each judge had the fight scored 133-133 (7 rounds apiece). One judge gave the 15th round to Norton; two gave it to Holmes. Norton really missed by a few hairs having a much more powerful legacy - he was 1-3 in four fights against Ali and Holes that could have gone either way. Had he beaten Holmes and won two or three of the Ai fights, he'd probably be thought of much differently. For the chess fans, he's probably the Victor Korchnoi or Paul Keres of boxing (Keres finished second in four consecutive tournaments - spanning a decade - where the first place finisher earned a match against the world champion.
RIP indeed.

He was a very hard man to beat because of his awkward style, and he did break the greatest's jaw. RIP Ken Norton

Back in the 70s a good friend had a pair of Siamese cats named Norton and Ali. There was a reason he didn't call them Foreman and Frazier.

Saw some footage of Ken Norton and it is so very clear that Ali simply couldn't get to grips with Ken Norton. Ali is a veritable legend, but God bless Ken Norton, a great but underrated fighter. I think he is sort of a James J. Braddock type fighter. Frazier was a bull, Ali towered over so many of his opponents, and Ken Norton looked in those clips more like a cruiser weight, and he battled Ali and even Ali was reported to have said to Norton that he never wanted to fight him again.

Norton is the one fighter other than Ali that I would consider totally frustrating to deal with. He was very, very good. I always enjoyed watching his unique style...

Norton was a great fighter in an era of great fighters, the likes of which we haven't seen since.
May he rest in peace. |
