I've always like the Cups and Balls. Learned it when I was just a kid and it has remained in my act for over 35 years. Here's a clip from the Magic Castle, enjoy. Happy to answer any questions about the routine as well as discuss cups in general. Lots to talk about on this subject I'm sure!

I use whatever body parts fall off at the time of performance. It keeps the act fresh.

Hi Ivan,
My days in the cup business are over, I don't have any plans to make any more Phoenix Cups. I'll call my friend Shawn Greer in Phoenix and find out if he has any sets left. TF |

Charlie, excellent question. . . why do I beat the **** out of my cups? I come from the Cellini School of Street Performing and I was taught that the sound of the wand against the cups has sort of a primal, percussive quality to it, like the beating of a drum or a heartbeat. It is a fact, someone will cross a busy street to see what the hell the guy is banging on and why. It's really about cheap theatrics and crowd gathering. However at some point there may have been an element of me working out my frustration by whacking the cups harder than I needed to.
Through the years many people have told me that they don't like it, and to a degree I have backed off some. But honestly I just love hitting cups hard with the wand. :cups: |

Here is my cup question if you know it would be much appreciated. Who was the first to do a hat load with his or her cups and and balls act in modern history? |

Fire, you stumped me. Not really sure. I'll bet Bill Palmer would know. As much as I know is Cellini would do a grapefruit load from his hat as early as 1984 which might be around the same time Gazzo was doing this as well. How far back in history does it go, I don't know. I have many pics of old C&B's artwork through the ages and while they do show load balls as a finale, I can't remember seeing anything that looked the a giant final load in the 14 &1500's.
Anyone else got any info on this? Enquiring minds want to know! |

Gazzo mentions that it came from a busker doing trick where he spins the coin on the table and covers it with his hat, when the spectator guess he raised his hat and a Guinea Pig was under it. Not sure where I read that but I read it somewhere.

Gr8gorilla. You are probably referring to Max Malini, who definitely produced a block of ice in that manner, and probably a guinea pig, too, at some point, during the early 1900s. That does seem like a logical leap. Danny Korem based his production of a large stone from under a hat on the Malini version. That method was in his book Korem Without Limits, which came out in 1985.

Tom...LOVED the cups and balls routine! Have you ever seen the video of the crazy dude doing a cup and ball routine with a water vase as well? The guy is ADHD but funny (and terrific) as h**l!

Gazzo always liked that, and when he started working on his cups routine, decided to incorporate that into the ending. Whether that performer had ever heard of Malini has never been established.
