REAL or MAGIC?

Great special. I'm so glad he went back to close up and street magic and a 90 minute special to boot! Say what you will about him but in my opinion he is the great magician of our time because he does what most can't. He understands his audience and uses his own brand of low key demeanor to get them eating out of his hands. Thanks Mr. Blaine I really enjoyed it!

So to you all, were the ice pick routines real or magic?

It's real, he previously performed it with a smaller needle.
Here's a video of Blaine demonstrating/explaining how he pierces himself through the hand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-_vdJSwMT4 |

It's an effect released by Dan Hauss called "Through & Through". Blaine just stepped it up a notch when he graduated from using a needle to using an ice pick.

Heheh. Awesome. Zane and Astrocity on separate sides of the isle.
Anyone else savvy ready to chime in?

Actually, they're not on separate sides of the aisle. Do a little investigation into "Through & Through."

I've seen SOOOOO many sideshow type acts, they don't really shock me anymore. My personal opinion on the question real or magic....who cares.....it's not even entertaining....at least to me.

The Dan Hauss thing seems to be REAL.
Wow. I was not familiar with this until astro and land brought it to my attention. It causes me anxiety even right now as I contemplate actually sticking something through my beloved hands. Do you guys think toying with your health in this way is worth it? - Danny- yeah exactly. The strongest effects are probably an amalgamation of expert deception with some quirk of nature. I am interested in the Shaman figure. Who mixes story with tricks with hypnotic ritual with (scientific) secrets of nature. I have often wondered if ("historical") Jesus might have actually been in part an actual (innovative / scientific) doctor. To me cutting edge science is wonder inducing.

Hauss is not the creator of the effect, he is just the only one whose had the nerve to put it out there. It's been a part of my working set for years, probably since 2006, but only after years of research and development. I can assure you all, it looks real because it is. Since the Blaine special aired, I've had numerous people contact me about teaching it, which honestly seems silly. I don't understand why everyone is always clamoring to do something someone sees on tv in the hands of someone else simply because it was on tv. Ok- I DO understand, I just don't get it Nobody should want to do it, it's certainly not for everyone, just as Cups and Balls, etc., isn't either. In any case, if anyone wants to see a short, more artsy twist of my version, feel free to check it out here:

David Blaine said on a recent interview that he'd been working on the needle/icepick through hand for about 13 years.

Looked REAL on TV

Has anyone seen a different trick by David where he places a string or thing copper wire or something similar in his open palm and suddenly on end of the string/wire rises a bit and then starts to go INTO his hand? All of this happens automatically and the wire goes in and in and finally it vanishes completely. I think it's from an old TV special by him. It'd be great to know more details about it!
