Hi bought some fanning powder and red back bee playing cards for learning some backparming of multiple playing cards (from the jefff McBride dvds). Now I am just in the process of breaking in a new deck with the ruler method as descibed by Jeff .I was then gonna use the bag method to add the fanning powder after (will be adding this outside )..Now my issue is that on front of the power which is by (murphy's magic supplies inc )there is a warning regarding it can be dangerous if not handled correctly ? how safe is this stuff if you have pets ? It says on the tub to wash hands and surface after use but won't there still be traces left on the cards even after you riffle ,slap the cards etc to remove excess when you later start using the cards .. Do you need to wash hands after each time you use the cards ?
Just airing on the side of caution before I use the stuff ,not worried about myself with the powder , but my pet bird if there is any residue on my hands and I forget to wash my hands after practicing with the cards. Cheers Blade

Zinc Stearate (fanning powder) is not a dangerous material. You shouldn't inhale it, swallow it, or wipe it in your eyes. It is an irritant. It is an ingredient in some cosmetics. For that matter, don't do the same with talcum powder.

Here is a link to the MSDS for Zinc Stearate http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9927330 take from it what you will, but as Larry noted, it is an irritant.

I know this is old but I have been reading various threads and watching several videos about applying fanning powder. I thought this topic was a good place to post a safety suggestion. I saw one suggestion to apply powder to each card with a sponge which is a bad idea. Many pros suggest using a paper bag but that method allows the powder to blow out of the bag which is fine outdoors or in a well ventilated space. It seems the current recommended method is to use a zip lock plastic bag to apply.
