Im looking for a short but flashy opener: most of those I see on the Internet are too long or involved for what I'm after. Any suggestions?

That's a nice move, I may have to learn it . However, I think I miscommunicated ... By opener I meant as in a flourishy move that actually ends up opening a deck of cards from a box.

Hmm, interesting. Please post a link that demos this kind of work if you can. Thanks.
I realize you don't like what is out there right now but I would like to consider it still and perhaps tweak it so it becomes good for you and others. I have been playing around with a sequence kinda sorta along these lines that involves a wine glass in addition to the deck. Best, CC

This is the sort of thing I mean about an opener that begins with a closed box:

Ok I watched the clip.
Thanks for giving it to me! A bit of a hot mess, and yet some solid satisfying rhythmic flows in there. Not bad. Ultimately though the deck is basically just removed from the box. There was a lot of dancing but nobody got laid. Shame. - By the way, what I was trying to do with the glass is balance it on its side and catch it in the glass. Along with some other flourishes. I think if you could think along these lines (but in reverse) and say remove the deck from the box (with one hand) so it balances on the box somehow and then you flick the deck into your other hand this would be quite memorable. To actually explore the physics of the deck with the box I think has tremendous potential. - Also- any one card flourish can basically become a flourish for usage on a boxed pack. Flourishing with a boxed pack is interesting to me but I am considerably more interested in an outrageous removal of the cards from the box due to the perceived and real difficulty or challenge. In my flourish work I like to emphasis the strong credible chance that I could drop the cards all over the floor. This increases suspense and drama. When I succeed it is a real moment. The best way to create the perception of risk is to by the way actually have risk there! I do not always succeed. A boxed deck decreases the perception of risk by making the ability of the cards falling lower. - Now of course I must ask at this point do you focus totally on "XCM" or do you also do magic? I have a few current box themed magic interests Removing a pack of cigarettes and then bam it becomes a deck of cards to a line like "I am trying to quit" Or removing a boxed deck and to 'remove' the cards you simply cause the box to vanish. (even though it was wrapped around the cards) Or removing a deck of cards from a box and then a second deck of cards from the same box. These are true 'openers' as the term is used within magic as a quick attention grabbing opening effect. - Anyways I will work on this. I already have a couple strong possibilities. Mastering the techniques so they are ready to perform in the real world repeatedly though could take weeks or months! - Are you familiar with my video CapCuts? I try to push things to the extreme driven by imagination without fear. best, CC

Hi caps - thanks for the input
I'm more magic than xcm, but I like to learn flourishes and incorporate them - I'm still very much a beginner in both areas, though. Yes, I'm going for maybe a single short flourish followed by an impressive get-the-cards-out-of-the-box move (you are right that it must be perceived to be difficult/impossible) - if I can incorporate a funny gag or silly visual magic effect with so much the better. I'll have to get the brain-gears whirring . Yes, I've come across you on YouTube, and I'll check out your stuff some more now. Thanks. |

For the opening effect of my spring flourish sequence, I use Lou Tannen's "Pack Full of Pep" from the rising cards chapter of Tarbell, Volume 2. The deck rises out of the case. It can be done surrounded in full lighting. I know that's not a flourish per se, but it quickly establishes you as a magician. I generally open the flap of the card case and have a spectator point at the case, whereupon the deck slowly rises out of the case. Remove the deck and place the case aside.
An added magical effect could be to make the deck rise out of the deck backs toward the audience. Remove the deck and fan it to show the faces are blank a la the blank face fan with a blank face card on the front. Close the fan and refan it backs up in normal orientation. Tap the back of the fan with the blank facer and then show that the faces have been magically printed. I usually have a face card on the face of the fan once the deck is "printed" just because that makes for a very startling contrast on the face of the fan. Sometimes I open with an all-backs routine where the deck can be fanned and shown to be backs on both sides. Then I make the faces appear--except that as I spread the deck face up on the table, it looks like four cards in the face up spread are still double backers. I remove them and show that they are actually the four aces--a perfect seque into a four ace routine where the aces are placed in different parts of the deck and then produced using the Audley Walsh Long Distance Side Spinner from Tarbell Volume 4--another flourish effect. I spin the last ace behind my back so that it spins back towards the audience. When I catch it, I glance at it before showing the face to the audience and miscall it saying, "Whoops! This one is the four of diamonds." Then I blow on the back of the card to "magically change it" to the fourth ace. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

The blank deck stuff is a cool thing to be reminded of.
I think producing a deck in mystical phases has a lot of potential to be charming and baffling. Best, Cap

If your looking for something that is all flourish but quick and flashy check out the 1 minute mark of the SEQUENCE by Aviv video:
http://youtu.be/l_z1DK-vABE The hardest part of this would be the deck flip part but that just takes time. D&D go into detail of that move (without the box)in The Trilogy.
