I noticed something rather odd, and I wonder if any of you hardcore ballooning nuts can tell me why this would be happening...
I did a a corporate Holiday magic show yesterday and as part of the package, I agreed to make balloon-doggies ahead of time for the group. And before you guys pounce on me about making something as simple as a doggy...let me say that most times, I'd agree. I generally try to never offer something so simple and hackneyed as a doggy. But they hired me for a magic show and REALLY wanted balloon-animals for the kids (about 70 kids or so) - but I had several magic shows back to back yesterday and time was tight - so handing out pre-inflated doggies was their only option (and they barely had a budget for my show, so hiring a separate balloon twister was not an option either). Anyway, the night before, I made about 90 balloon doggies in a variety of colors and packed them in a large black garbage bag. When I got to the show the next morning and it came time to hand them out after the show, I noticed that a large number of the doggies had NO noses any more. I'd say 1 out of every 5-6 doggies were noseless! It was not a huge deal, since I had made extras, and I whipped together a few more on the fly...but I was really wondering why the nose in particular would be popped/deflated in every case like that. Note: I did roll the nose bubble through the ears on each of the doggies I made - something I do to lock the pieces together better and to protect them a bit from being unravelled by little hands as easily. Would this have anything to do with the fact that so many noses were gone? Just seemed weird to me - any ideas why this area in particular was losing it's air like this?

It's possible when you did the roll-through, the balloon got a tiny hole. You wouldn't notice it then, but the air slowly leaked out. The only other thing I can think of is that the dogs were fighting in the garbage bag. The larger dogs might have bitten the smaller dogs.
My only suggestion is to squeeze the balloon to make sure it is nice and soft before you start. I think it's a good idea to do the roll-through because you are right, that the kids will manage to take them apart otherwise. |

If they didn't pop, it was the knot.

You must have accidentally used your bag of balloon swallowing balloons.
Don't knock the doggy. Classics never die...sometimes their noses pop but they live on. Sounds like you may have stressed a part of the balloon with the roll thru. Karen's advice is spot on. Soften your balloons until it's borderline uncomfortable. They won't pop for your or your friends, they are more malleable for twisting and sculpting and distorting, and they'll last longer. Balloon dogs are the best balloon sculpture around compared to having no balloons. While I can't quite explain the nose dilemma I can commend you for finding a simple solution for keeping your customers happy. Kudos! |

I can't help you with the nose issue, sorry. But I did want to chime in on the balloons. It's fine to do the basic dog in that situation, but just as a bit of advice, I would recommend in the future that you do a wand instead. It will increase the cost of each balloon by about three (so instead of about seven cents, your looking at something more like twenty cents), but they're much better looking and way sturdier.
For this, just grab a variety of character heads (or use the same character heads so kids won't fight - aliens come in a variety of colors if you'd like variety in that way), then make a one balloon wand and pop the head on top. For me, this is even easier and quicker than doing a one-balloon dog (but then again I never really got "fast" with the one-balloon dog). Like I said, it's a little more expensive because you're using two balloons and the heads cost more than a 260, but I think it would be the better option in most situations When all else fails, you can pass them along to me for balloon twisting, lol... looks like we're in the same area (just kidding - I know you said they didn't have the budget for it).

Thanks for the suggestions Matt - I'll consider the wands in the future. You're right - they are as fast as the doggies (unless you do the 3-twist doggies...but those are incredibly lame, imo) and probably look more impressive.
And yup, we're in similar areas - I know a few of the Balloon Jam guys - Bryan, Kurt - maybe a few others. If I ever manage to get the time, I should join you guys at Mario's one of these days.

Definitely - we cancelled this week because of the snow, so we're getting together next Tuesday at Marie's house (Prinkles the Clown). The more the merrier I don't know if you're on the facebook group for it... if not, ask Kurt or Bryan to add you
