I received this sad news from Tony Weiland earlier today.
"It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell everyone of the passing of Karl Norman. He passed away on Christmas after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Norine and many many friends who all loved him dearly. His contributions to the world of magic are many, from helping Gene Gordon build his magic shop and manufacturing many of the tricks he sold. To all the years of working behind the bar at the legendary Forks Hotel with Eddie Fechter. He always had time to share a story, joke, or trick with people and usually left them laughing. He lectured throughout most of the continental United States and also in Canada and twice in Europe. For years he has been considered the "Dean of Western New York Magic" and his influence will be felt for many generations to come.Karl would not want people to be sad but to celebrate the times we had together. Although today I feel the world is just a little bit less magical." Tony Weiland tonysmagic@aol.com |

This is sad news. Karl was one of the most genuine and sincerely nice guys in magic.

I live in Buffalo and used to go to the Forks often before it burned down. Sadly I never did get to meet Eddie Fechter. But Karl was incredibly kind to me, always greeted me with a warm hello whenever I attended a magic lecture thereafter. And a lot of other magicians I have to say were smug and like "we're *special* because we happen to know a few moves you *don't.*" Big deal. All that skulking around being "secretive." Magicians and their Sucrets. (Karl used to keep his rubber bands and thumb tack for his "Card on the Ceiling" in a Sucrets tin. "This is where I keep my SEcrets" he'd say, as if he had misread what was printed on the box.)He had a lot of gags and everyone sitting at the bar at the Forks loved him.

His book is priceless for the close-up magician. Met him at Abbott's one year were he entertained many at the picnic tables, always polite and would perform upon request.

Tony Weiland followed up with the arrangements for Karl Norman.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Many have been asking about arrangements for Karl Norman after his passing, here is an update. As many know Karl really did not want any type of wake or service, and his body was donated to science. So in respect of his wishes we will be holding just a broken wand ceremony at the January 6th meeting of the Gene Gordon-Karl Norman Ring 12 meeting. It will be held at 7:00pm at 3131 Sheridan Dr Amherst NY 14226. Norine will be in attendance as well as many of his close friends. We certainly hope you will be able to join us to help remember a remarkable man. For those who wish to send there respects please send all Correspondence to: Norine Foster Shisler 139 McConkey Dr Kenmore, NY 14223 Karl loved magic. So after the ceremony we will be breaking into groups to share some magic. So bring your cards, coins, and best lines. Unfortunately I only know a small part of Karl's world so please pass this on to others who are not on this list. Thanks for being a part of his life Tony Weiland |
