While the Anderson Tear is probably his most famous contribution to magic, he did remind me that he is "not a one trick pony." I don't want to tell you the name of his new book, as he has not given me permission (nor have I asked), but I think you will get a chuckle out of it. I'll ask him about Henning and see if if will give me the OK to give out the title. The copyright date on the DVD is 2004. Doug

Thanks Doug! That was a wonderful post! I am so happy to hear that Gene is still among the living!
Do you have any idea of the circa of that Ytube video of him? I'm going to guess late 1960's, but I really do not know. Doug

Gene is happily retired, still performing, and is working on his book. Having known Gene for over 40 years, I must agree. He is an exeellent performer, and very definitely not a "one trick pony"!
With the "recent" change in physical size of newspaper sheets, he has had to do a major "rethinking" of parts of the newspaper act, but, knowing him, he will manage to do it. When Jay wanted to add Gene's T&R to his act, and I was helping him in his booth at the 1975 IBM Convention in Louisville, he demonstrated (read that: performed!) the T&R,perhaps a "hundred" times per day! --I know! (I cleaned up the "mess"!!!) The formula for adding a new trick to one's act is" 1. Learn how it is DONE. 2, Learn how to DO it. 3, Learn how to DO it so that it ENTERTAINS AN AUDIENCE. Jay (and Fran) had published the original secret, so #1 was accomplished. #2 was "done" at the Convention in Louisville.! With Jay's backgound and experience, #3 didn't take long! How many magicians have had their trick used in a Broadway Show??? Doug did Gene's trick for the run of "IT'S MAGIC"! At Abbott's Get Together,in the late '60s and early 70s, we all stayed at the "CONKLIN YMCA". Doug Henning, Gene Anderson, Dennis Loomis, Jim Robertson, and I had a "hand" in advising Doug Henning.

One thing I just love about the Café is to be able to hear these great, nostalgic stories of the magic and magicians of yesteryear. Dick, your posts are wonderful time capsules. (PM'D you).
The newspaper sizes here in my town have remained standard. I don't think they are planning on changing the size of the tribune. One solution would be to stockpile them before they change the size, however I realize that is not very practical. In the past, when I was performing Anderson's tear, I had stockpiled hundreds of papers. Aside from space considerations, the main problem is that the papers YELLOW over time. I think that is due to the acid content in the papers. Once they yellow, they are not of much use. Ends up being a waste of money having purchased them. I remember Doug doing that on Broadway. I remember it clearly and distinctly. I can still hear his magical voice in my head as he recited the Anderson patter, almost word for word. Yet, part of his magic was that he made the words sound like his own. Did not sound canned. I honestly don't think the original patter can be improved upon. I honestly don't. It is perfect. As I'm practicing, I can only emulate the best, and try to make it sound fresh and new; unrehearsed. Doug is still inspiring folks, such as yours truly even though he is gone. I love that guy. Often have dreams about him. Now I'm getting emotional again. We ALL owe Gene and Doug a debt of gratitude. We really, REALLY do. Their contributions are the stuff of legends. Hurts me BADLY that Doug doesn't have a website in his honor.

I work for a newspaper, so have no trouble getting extras. You might check with your local paper, probably give you a bundles to practice on, and it takes that long to get good and holding th paper naturally. Also, I use 16 or 18 gauge wire from local hardware story. I'm always losing the spool so buy what is available. Either gauge works well, though I prefer the "security" of the thicker 16 gauge.

I'm using plunber's solder. Works great. But it's not cheap. Wish I knew a cheaper substitute, at least for practicing.
