Hi Barry
JR Russell checking in to say hi...(the guy who was the inspiration behind the pop-up pad I showed you at Kidabra last year) Can you say a few words about Kidabra! It seems like it is the most underrated Convention in Magic. Since moving back to the US 4 years ago, it is THE Convention we like to attend each year! My wife loves the creative ideas and sharing that happens there. When I talk about it other magic gatherings, people give your a weird look! Next on the list would be to attend KAX! cheers JR (the guy who played the Priest in Vancouver last summer) |

I know you JR, you don't need to remind me. Love ya man.
Kidabra is underrated? I didn't know. But it probably is and here's my thought on why. It's for childrens and family entertainers. They are the largest group and the most working group in magic but they are also the red headed step child of magic. Nothing again red headed children. Card guys look down on us because we are thought to not have the skills but not all card guys could hold the attention of 1000 people for an hour like a kid guy can. Kidabra also has mostly pros in attendance. MOST of the people who attend make their living off magic or clowning. Other conventions, in my opinion, have more hobbists who like card tricks and close up. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT AT ALL, it's just one of the differences. Point is, children's and family entertainers will probably always be seen as beneath others but we still make the money and I'm pretty confident that my paychecks would hold up to a lot of the guys that have "illusionist" on their card. But that's just MY OPINION and an opinion is like the nose on your face, they are used to smell stink. www.kidabra.org |

I guess everyone on this thread is called JR except for Barry!!! I hope life is treating you well my friend! I would be interested to hear your impressions of KAX versus Kidabra. I know it was further for you to travel, and you had some flight problems, but personally it was my favourite convention ever and had some features missing at Kidabra. Several of my friends felt the same way. What were your impressions? I know it was the first year and an experiment, but I am hopeful it will continue with great success. JR

I really enjoyed KAX. I still consider it a part of Kidabra, just in a different location so I enjoy the principles set forth in Kidabra. The benefit of KAX was the ability to bring in west coast people and a large pool of unique talent. In addition the vast talent of product line of Steve Axtell and all the great magic locations to visit near by. It couldn't help but be a winner. I don't know if I can afford to come back next year but then, I haven't been invited yet so we will see. But naturally I would highly recommend it to anyone. It was one of the best closing shows, if not the best, I've ever seen at Kidabra and definitely the best I've ever seen at ANY MAGIC CONVENTION.
