He does mention something a couple of times regarding why he makes it the way he does. I won't get into a debate as to how important it is, but he did give a reason. He talks about how it can be exposed, which would ruin the effect, and when to check while performing to make sure that everything is set correctly, which I thought was nice since there are plenty of things out there that ignore that everything doesn't go exactly right 100% of the time. |

My card has a bold dark image...that being said--does it matter that it's a full-bleed to the edge, on the printed side?

I bought this today myself and I too have a dark face card for the contrast. I really looking forward to getting the download. Unfortunately, so far, the zip file that I get downloaded will not open. I tried various ways to open it to no avail. I wrote Kranzo and he said he never had any problems before but may have to send it to me in a different way. I'm now wait to see the alternative. Hope it doesn't take too long as I am anxious to get mine made.

OK, so I purchased this yesterday and just watched the instructional video and I thought it was very well produced, the gimmick is not difficult to make. Yes, business cards like Marcus Eddie's are best but it should work with any business card.
One thing that I thought was funny though at the end. Did anyone else catch the irony in the clean up? If you have more people who want a business card than you have in your hand you go back into your pocket and get more business cards after you have just told everyone that you only buy and carry 'blank' cards and print them on demand, when people want them. You would think he would bring out more blanks and print them on the spot. I guess you could say you printed more earlier and you have them in your pocket. |

He mentioned the effect it creates but not why it is better or worth the time rather than other methods. His does lend to something I cant say here. NOR does he discuss on how it can be exposed. I really would have liked to see that. I have watched it a few times as I was making it so think I have a good idea of what was discussed. Yes many Penguin downloads seems to trail off after the basics when even just one or two minutes longer would help and less chitter chatter in the beginning of some. However I will say there is not too much in Eddie's video but why not a few more minutes on finer points that magician who want to REALLY use it will ask. If you want to provide the time code , maybe I can understand your interpretation. The only part that has to do with setting up and angles is general expected subject matter to work the trick not really the issues. However, after building with it and working with it all night. I am a little more disappointed as his subtly move I see flashes of in the mirror which means in reality, it is another face on effect with some distance required. Also my hands are smaller and found some of grips to change how wide I can spread the cards. I am also having some issues with the change that I would have liked him to address. You can see later on in his teaching of the performance how it might not looks as good if pacing is not right. That is, in the mirror I noticed a rather large tell so went back to wtch his hands since he does not go into much detail. Then watching one of his final demos could see that the issue I was seeing is visible on camera but since there is a reflection off the gloss, on video it is harder to notice but live they will see how it works if you are not careful. That is, speed helps but also hand position. He has a more open look but maybe is exposing it to some who might be watching. Reading your description, I wonder if there was a DVD of this that was chopped down for the download since it sure sounds like more info was there than in the 36 min video I have been watching. I agree, far too many of these Penguin Cool box effects could be better off with some thought put into what is really important, the fine points of handling. Marcus does a fine job with building it in real time but when it comes to the change, could have given a little more time and Penguin a few angles. Also, this video would sell better if they actually showed the full demo. This is one case it will show you you can start with this from your pocket (as long as you have the other angles or distance covered. If you really take the time to build this and play with it, his gimmick design shows some flaws in several areas. Sure it looks pretty good front on for video. Also those who have it could pick up a nice tip that he never explains but is in his demo. He eithe he forgot to mention it I don't have white cards so thought this would be great when a card was asked for. However I noticed, and I wonder if he designed his that way, that his card has a strong advantage that not everyone will have. If you have a a mostly white card, you will be fine. if you have FB cards you will have to work much harder than he does. If you don't know what FB cards are, I am sorry, I am trying not to give too much away. I really don't know yet if I can commit to this one.At least I have to rework some of design to help with some angles if I had a family. SO say you were in a store and you started this and people started to gather around. It would be very hard to pull off. I am hoping to figure out a version where the cards can be held waist level and horizontal so they are looking down on it. I am not sure it is possible with this gimmick. |

Acrotest maybe consider not being so open and specific here.
As to your irony comment, I don't like his premise anyway. Business cards are HAVE NEVER BEEN CHEAPER to have made. I will say I like his idea on if you have more than 4 cards to give out but people need to pay attention to HOW he does it. He does not fully explain the very important handling so that they are not wondering why you don't exhaust all the cards before getting more. He does show it but I feel many will gloss over it |

Sounds like you know what I'm already about to say, but one timestamp is 3:20 Regarding exposure while performing, 25:50, 27:24, and 28:59 are some specific spots, but almost every time he does it he mentions checking to make sure things are aligned. |

For me? It looked great straight on the demo. Great idea, BUT too many angles to watch, too much fumbling to make sure everything is "Set" to go. This is a Instant DL so it can't sit in my sock drawer, just on my hard drive.
More $$$ down the Magic Black Hole. Just my opinion. I'm sure some of you guys can use this.

Just curious. I know this just came out, but has anyone used this on a live gig yet?

Jack,
I know what you are saying but also, I think the more people work with these they make them work. I think as many do, it is far to easy to just to right it off rather than work with it There is stuff I am doing now that if I based it on my first few days I would never be performing. It is far to easy to say "not for me" since there is plenty more tricks out there to rush into rather than try to work out what you don't like. If I think back to how obvious I thought a TT or EB was going to be and then after working it and then working it more, how it was my mind that made me think these props were too limited I am not saying you are wrong, that for you it does not work but since you asked if anyone is using it live, for more than their wife or children, I am guessing you don't want to give up on it just yet. I do have issues with it. I am going to keep working with it and see if I can get it smoother. I do believe there is allot to be said for practice . I also have bought enough that I was not happy with and trying the approach of learning it to the point of performing it before knowing 100% if it can work for me. If anything I might use it for video. |

3:20 only explains what he thinks but does not explain the over complication and added draw back compared to what woulc be more obvious to get a more natural effect. His design seems be over complicating things beyond what naturally would occur. So I would have liked to knwo WHY he choose the method rather than duplicate reality.
And as for the "checking" again this is common sense to pull it off. It is not as you were saying in your initial post that he discusses angles. He does not go into any detail on that or performing in the real situations. Maybe because it is obvious after you download what the limits are. Quote:

Jack,
You do raise some points. All the kiddos love instant downloads. I am not sure if they are traded but for most honest folk they are stuck with it. That is why I would rather wait and by a physical DVD or book. At least then I might be able to sell it on the black market to recover a little and right the rest of as an other idea for the knowledge base. |

You're right Powermagic.
As frustrating as it is, I still think it's a good effect and may work on it some more. It's just that I have tons of this "Latest & Greatest" ending up in wasted money.I am not knocking Marcus in general. He has some cool effects out. I just hope this doesn't start going down the road of some other magic creators with the old "Throw enough S**T against the wall and see what sticks)routine. You try to sell that stuff and lose your butt! Which I will be doing next month at a flea market run by a club I belong to. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback and will be back to follow this thread and post if I come up with anything. Jack

I never mentioned angles, so not sure what you mean, unless you're equating a Shin Lim moment to someone not discussing all angles when to me it meant more specifically that it has to be the perfect angle, and possibly even faked. Regarding common sense - I'll never presume that of any given group. Or, as been said, common sense is the least common of all senses. |
