Hi, everyone. I'm a lurker from way back. and this will be my first post ever.
Magic has been a hobby of mine for quite a while, but I'm only now recently seriously returning to it after about a 10 year layoff. About 20 years ago I was taught an effect that I can't recall all the specific details about and want to relearn it properly. Here's the description: You have a small packet of cards held face up. You count them down as the 5, 4, 3, 2, and Ace of Spades. Turn the packet over and flip the 5 face up. The 5 is placed in the middle of the packet, it ends up back on top. This is repeated. The 5 is set aside and you show the 4, which is placed in the packet. It too comes to the top. The 4 is set aside. Here's where my memory gets fuzzy. My recollection is that the 3 is turned face up and placed in the middle of the packet, yet when the cards are spread the three remaining cards are all face down. The 3 then reappears face up and is set aside. There's a sequence of slights here that I don't exactly recall. I've worked out on my own how to duplicate this poorly remembered part of the routine, but I think there's a better way to do it. The conclusion has the 2 and Ace of Spades shown face up and then the 2 is set aside. The remaining one card is, of course, the Ace, but it's now the Ace of Hearts. Can anyone help me with this effect's name/creator and also help point me towards the original source? Thanks! Dave |

That's the one, Bulla. Thanks!
I found a video of Jennings doing this effect and I realize I definitely need to get some instructions on the entirety of this routine again. Is this explained in a book or video somewhere that you can recommend? Thanks again! Dave |

It's in The Classic magic of Larry Jennings, and on Volume 4 of Easy to Master Card Miracles by Michael Ammar.

Derek Dingle had a terrific presentation for this trick that he called "Too Many Cards."

Martin Nash also has a variation too called Limited Ambition which is slightly easier than Dingles version

Thanks very much for all the help. I believe the effect I learned was Nash's Limited Ambition, or at least that's the one that is closest to what I recall. I found a performance video of that online and was able to work out the part of the routine where I was fuzzy.
Thanks again! Dave |

There is also a variant in The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings that uses the A through 4 and I actually prefer that handling.
Chris Kenner also has a version in Out of Control that's pretty cool. Welcome to The Café Wilktone! |

Jerry Mentzer has a version in the 1974 book CARD CAVALCADE II, page 155. He says it "was inspired by a yet unpublished effect of Derek Dingle."

William P. Miesel's version "Ambitious Five" can be found in "The Creative Card Magic of William P. Miesel" (1980)but I've always used Dingle's presentation since I first read it.

Bob White has a great handling of this in his lecture notes, "It's a Matter of Style."
