Recently, while playing dominos with some friends, three extra people showed up to play, but not an extra set of dominos were to be found, thus the three extras had nothing to do except drink. I happened to have a few decks of cards on me, so we opted to play some cards instead. We played Texas Hold 'em, Blackjack, and I taught them 500 Rummy, a game with which they were unfamiliar.
One thing led to another, and one of the girls said, "Patrick does card tricks, Patrick, do some card tricks." and the other two said, "Yeah," and "Ok." During the 40 minute marathon that followed, I did everything I could think of FASDU. I Biddled, culled, copped, counted, palmed, slid, and shifted diagonally, without losing one effect, and without losing their attention. Three times, one girl kept asking me, "Is this real?" Her friends laughed and answered for me twice, "No, silly! They're tricks!" She finally leaned over, very close to me, and asked the third time, "Is this real?" I leaned in and told her that our beliefs are often stronger than the truth that be, and that is an ok thing. I also told her that I love it when my complex plans come together. Personal notes re: 40 minute sessions. Slow the heck down, Patrick, jeez. I'm ready to go on to the next one, and the next, and the next. But they're still absorbing the first one. I had to slow WAY down. There were 10 and 15 second delays between the ends of routines and reactions of astonishment. I trod on the first one, but not the others. They really wanted to handle the cards. I let them see the cards, let them fiddle with them, let them shuffle, let them try to do the trick themselves. This happened many times during Trost's In the Hands Prediction. I did it, then they wanted to do it. It worked for me, it didn't work for them. We ran through the procedures to that trick six or more times, and it got stronger each time I was successful. Finally, after the last success, I had the deck set up for Spectator Cuts the Four of a Kind, a segue I've been working on lately. I had to slow down to get the set up to work, not speed up. While the work was solid, I relied more on personality and character. Personality and character are more important than the tricks themselves. Personality is easier to digest. Character is easier to remember. Personality and character made the tricks stronger. We aren't robots, we're human beings who experience emotional responses. And the best emotion response is, "Is this real?"
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I Can relate because I was preforming for two people ones a Scientist with a doctorate the other was her older retired mom. Throughout all of my effects the mom was like wow this is just magic I think it's real he's magic and the Dr. would say oh mom no its not, there just magic tricks. I just didn't say anything and did something so amazing that it blew away the Dr so badly she stopped saying that.

I had a girl bend a coin in her own hand one time. She looked at me and asked "If my mind is this strong, do you think I can focus on getting a boyfriend?" She was very serious and on the verge of tears. I told her whatever she puts her mind to she will achieve, no matter how long it takes. I hope she found her boyfriend, because it was the one time I saw magic literally change someones life.
