I’m very new to escapology. Currently trying to absorb as much as I can before trying any. One common item I see a lot of is the mail bag escape. I have a huge gap in my understanding of this. I’ve seen demos of this being done in full view but most descriptions state this is done under cover. In full view escapes is the implication that the lock is defeated and the bar removed?. The ones done under cover often have the bar replaced after the escape, Isn’t this more of an illusion than an escape?
I’ve tried looking for specifically full view mail bag escapes but they seem thin on the ground. Are they just not very common? Is there recommended reading which would help me with this? |

One problem with a mailbag, and a few other escapes done in the old days, is that mail bags are no longer used by the post office. In the days around the turn of the last century (I mean 1900) they were a common way for the post office to load them on a train, or other transport. Many people saw them, were aware of them and knew their reputation for holding up strong to no matter what. Hense the idea that if you could get out of one, that was amazing.
Today it is a sack with two locks and a bar. It still works. I have done it, but without the recognition of the item for what it is... Something is lost. Jonathan Goodwin took the concept an updated it very neatly by using a giant vacuum bag, and having the air sucked out of it. Once again it was in the arena of something everyone understood. Is scared the spit out of me to watch him do it too.

Body bag! Contact your local mortuary, or a friendly person who knows someone who knows someone etc.
Cliff I'm not sure that the Jonathan Goodwin originated that, sure he did it on his show but don't think it was his idea. I could be wrong (it's not uncommon). I'm also pretty sure that the shock doc was doing his head in bag straight jacket escape for a long time. |

One of the thoughts I had was to do the sack escape inside a plastic bin liner and duct tape. This would give cover to the escape. I had assumed this has been done before.
Slightly off topic but very pleased I picked up a copy of 33 rope ties and chain escapes which I am pleased about. Thanks for the help. |

The giant vacuum bag was, for a time, a staple in "edgy" sideshow performance. I never understood how people believed it.

And yes, Shock Doc did SJ with his head wrapped. He's one of my students, and consulted with me about it.
