Dear friends,
A routine, 5 hands of poker deal is done from a borrowed shuffled deck. Each takes their pile and think one of the cards from it. Then the cardw are collected, mixed and dealed into 5 piles again. The magician takes each pile and without seeing the faces finds the card thought of by each person..

Try starting here.
There are many tricks, and many effects, but rarely a Grand Effect. There are many entertainers, but few real magicians. Many technicians, but few artists who use their art to explore their vision. - Derren Brown, Absolute Magic

25 cards? Sounds like "Mutus Nomen Dedit Cocis", first described in 1769 by Gilles-Edme Guyot, to me.

Hi Jim
When I first read I misread as Gilles explained it to you in 1769.

This 25 card version actually predates the one I first thought of. This 25 card version can be found in H. van Etten, Recreations Mathematiques (1629). It was Frank Garcia in his Super Subtle Card Miracles (1973), that gave it the name "Poker-Mental" or as it is usually referred to today, "Mental Poker." I had to do a lot of research when I wrote up my variation called "Santa-Mental" for the Mini-Mysteries Book 4 at The Magic Nook.
