Nice one Ken. Yes you took a chance, but it was a good one to take. How long were people talkng about you after that? Weeks? Months? Good job.

I think Chris Chaylen did a similar thing then vanished off the face of the earth. Spooky. Wouldn't work in America as they already have heaps of them.

I am still eating out on it now and having got away with it I had an opening for near the mark OTT comedy which took me and the escapes to heights only dreamed of. Shows for the comedy store, Jeremy Beadle, Yul Brynner and club work too much to handle. I was refered to as the Chubby Brown of spec acts by Billy Connely which gave me underground work but TV wouldn't touch me hahaha.
So not everyone's cup of tea but it kept the wolf from the door and bought my first house outright. My mother saw me working at Rumours in the Strand and disowned me there and then.Only after paying for her trip to Aus did she understand why her son had a foul mouth hahaha. I'm too old to care any more and my skin is as thick as hell. Well that used to be my way but not any more as I have mellowed with age. |

Been reading. Here is my philosophiy as a pragmatist with no illusions of convincing people that I have special powers.
What if the question initially was "WHY do you explain your abilities?" As opposed to the question "How do you explain your abilities?" Some are answering how and some are answering why. I've never been asked either one. No one ever asks a singer how they explain their abilities to sing. During an escape I may offer how or why, as patter - but - generally what I'm saying is for the sole purpose for misdirection. This "how" question is normally asked in the Strolling Magic section by new Close-Up magicians who are afraid they will be caught performing a sleight - and they want to defend their magic. When an illusionist is asked "How do you explain the tiger?" They answer "It's magic" ... and they move-on. When someone is a stunt-man,person no one asks "How do you explain your ability to roll around?".........if they did, the answer would be "Because I'm good". The only time you need to explain is A. You are not comfortable in your own skin, B. You are portraying someone with supernatural powers. Anyone with supernatural powers MuSt have a story, to sell their abilitys like... Superman, Spiderman and a"few" mystics. .

I've seldom been asked, but my stock answer is:
"The study of locks, restraints, mechanical engineering, physiology and LOTS of PRACTICE. Every form of restraint has a potential weak point--if you can find it."

The way the reporter hit me with it was as if,,,, what's so special about you attitude. He was out to belittle what they had just seen me do.
He compared with magic, kids shows, illusion, and other allied arts which were known to use trickery, so I put the escapology in its own notch as not comparable to anything else. So that's how the question got used,,,,, only me being a superior being would make all this possible. Of course !!!!!!!! |

Seems like there are two approaches and two types of mind-sets causing them.
1, people that are obsessed with defending their talent and have a need to live up to an image they aspire to. (Generally less successful ). 2. People that are successful and look past the small problem of being pigeon holed. They are not interested in what others think about and how to justify their existence. The difference could be summed- up to a Stanislofsky principle "there are inners and there are outers". The inners do what it takes to make a dream come true because they imagine how others do it - and the outers assume (take on) the problem first then makes it happen. (Two opposite approaches) The outers figure- out what to do to entertain the people -first- then figure out how. The inners try to emulate what they've seen others do and present their performance based on learning the mechanics first then trying to manufacture a persona to fit the performance. It's the difference between an employee and the owner. The entire question is really a theatrical question in the approach to acting a part. An inner will torture themselves about "motivation" and is consumed weather they need to do it one way, or another, heaven forbid that someone might challenge them, as to their reason. In the back of their mind they are pretending to make the audience believe they have a special way, or special talent whereas they are actively hiding the fact that anyone can do it without practice. The outer person realizes that the average person is only interested in what is happening and does not care where the idea comes from or that it's a stunt. They outer just does it because others like to watch and they know a safe way to present the act. So this "motivation" question is a theatrical one and has nothing to do with how much ability or knowledge you have. As long as the escape is not lame, like being restrained where there is no challenge or danger . Then it's fair game. There is no escape when you are 100 pounds and using an extra large strait jacket... So the question of where do you get your supernatural powers, in a case like that, has no meaning, no effect and no legitimacy. For those that never took an acting class, this is acting 101. Please consult you local acting workshop for additional lessons.

This guy has a cd for $30 which teaches removing handcuffs. doesn't say anything about packing crates, boxes or prison cell.
http://www.theencouragingword.org/removing-the-handcuffs Don't know if it would work on foreign made cuffs. It's cheaper than Dooley's box set.
