How much would private lessons cost with Maestro Juan Tamariz (or Jeff McBride or ...)? How long would it take you to accumulate the knowledge that Juan possesses? How long would it take you to pay for the book if it helped you book one additional show per year?

I just ask myself one question: how much would it have cost if Stephen Minch was still the publisher.

I'd have given anything for a 80s/90s kaufman or minch-style version of the Thompson book (excellent writing, cheap cost) but unfortunately we're in the position where only expensive double volumes in fancy binding is the trend - and up goes the cost of all books. Good luck! For now I'll be ponying up the cash like the sucker I am.... |

The Spanish language version of this book was published many years ago. Did it command the equivalent (high) price when it originally appeared?

It says 590 pages. Most magic books are now filled with blank pages, huge margins, and with a large police. I’ve not seen this one. But I have some examples in my library in which a 250 pages book could (should ?…) have been a reasonably 180 one.

Tim Cavendish - apologies. I was under the impression it had been available for years in the Spanish language. I stand corrected!

Just a few notes on cost/pricing.
This was a very expensive book to produce. Of course, it took Juan decades to write the material and publish the Spanish edition. It took Rafael Benatar the better part of a year to translate, and of course he was compensated for his hard work and delivering high-quality results. It took close to a year for Stephen Minch to do the editing, proofreading, layout, etc for the book. Of course, his stellar efforts are compensated as well. Then we have the actual printing costs of creating the book within the US. There are THOUSANDS of man-hours, and quite a bit of actual monetary cost, that went into bringing this book to life. As noted above, the Spanish edition sells for approximately $120 (depending on the currency conversion rate of the day). I know that offering a book in a translated language may seem simple, but it is really a very large undertaking. For a book of this length, and with this caliber of content, nobody is trying to take advantage of the buying public. We're very proud to have brought this to the market so that everyone can learn from the Maestro and make their magic better. I understand that it's not a cheap book, but in the grand scheme of things, it is a relatively small investment into your art.

Yes, the book is expensive. Is it worth it?
The section on memory wiping--just that section--is worth double the price of the book. I've sat with both David Berglas and Juan and had them wipe my memory during the course of a trick (in other words, for example, I believe I had shuffled a deck when I had not). It is the greatest weapon a magician could ask for. |
