The Associated Press Big Story department just released a major story about Scranton magician Dorothy Dietrich and The Houdini Museum's work on his grave site.
http://bigstory.ap.org/article/1c07d0864......rave-nyc Here is some background not covered in the story For over a decade magician Dorothy Dietrich of Scranton's Houdini Museum (http://Houdini.org) has been working single handedly, between shows, to restore Houdini’s grave site in Queens, New York. Her work has been approved by the management of the cemetery and the family of Houdini. She often goes there with magician Dick Brookz also from the museum to do cleaning and upkeep of the site. In November 2011, at a cost of over $10,000 they replaced the missing bust of Houdini, along with former escape artist Steve Moore, that graced the top of the excedra that was destroyed by vandals. The bust was missing for some 39 years. Last year, at her urging, she persuaded The Society of American Magicians (SAM) to begin taking up the mantel and responsibility of Houdini’s grave. This was done with the help of SAM executives David Bowers, Dal Sanders, Ice McDonald and Brad Jacobs. The Society of American Magicians is the oldest, most respected and wealthiest organizations in the magic world. Houdini was responsible for its growth to hundreds of clubs and thousands of members worldwide, and was president of the organization for 9 years. During that time he spearheaded it enormous growth. Dorothy Dietrich magic career has been modeled, in many ways, after Houdini's. She has starred in dozens of television specials including HBO's The Worlds Greatest Escapes that was hosted by movie mega star Tony Curtis, who played the life of Houdini in the Paramount movies about Houdini’s life. She has also starred in Man and His Mysteries, with Dick VanPatten, You Asked For It with Rich Little, Evening Magazine, Just For The Record, The Best of Everything, Atlantic City Alive, Mysteries of the Unknown, The Travel Channel's Magic Road Trip, Mysteries At The Museum, The Bill Cosby Special, Montel Williams Show, etc., Houdini's wife, after Houdini died, held a tribute to Houdini for ten years, who she then turned over to friend, Houdini biographer, and writer of The Shadow series, Walter B. Gibson, who did them at Dorothy Dietrich’s Magic Towne House in New York City. Before Gibson died he turned the legacy over to Dorothy Dietrich. Scranton's Houdini Museum, established by Dietrich, is the only building in the world dedicated to Houdini and is open year round, every day in the summer and weekends the rest of the year. When in town and not traveling she performs in a stage show at the Houdini Museum that includes doves, poodles, a duck and a rabbit, and even floats a person chosen from the audience who rises high in the air. The museum also has the only regularly traveling Houdini exhibit that goes to Casinos, banks, colleges, schools as well as to corporate events.
