Folks, has anyone noticed that Nassau Chemical Corp. seems to have stopped producing the *dry* "Fantastic Flash Paper" (see attached JPEG) in 8" x 9" sheets? Or that the new, "ships wet" version is far, far inferior to the old stuff? The old paper burned much more quickly, and with a much more brilliant (quicker) burst of fire. Could anyone recommend another commercial flash paper product? This is a real problem, IMO.
Thanks, John Click here to view attached image. |

It could be possible you did not dry it as well as you thought OR it is a bad batch. I had a bad batch from time to time that would have a acid odor. it was replaced by the dealer. If they don't properly neutralize the acid wash, it could slowly degrade.
However I still have an older stock so cant say if newer is poorer. Having made it before, the process they use would be the same as always but if the strength of of acid or fixing time or change of paper, well it could be a bad batch. Do you have smoke or ash? If no smoke or ash and not any thicker paper, it is possible it just was not fully dry. Now if it is not reallyNassau but some over seas company, it is possible they did not use a strong enough acid. But usually you get more defects like smoke and ash when burning slower. |

The flash paper was completely dried out, so that doesn't appear to be the problem. It burns redder, and slower, than the older stuff.

Dried does not mean anything. I ahve had batches get dry and brittle. If they do not fix it properly or do not soak it long enough, you will have issues. You have a bad batch.
As far as I know, most use Nassau. |

No I have to agree the new flash paper is clearly not as good as the old stuff. I use this in every show for 20 years close to 10,000 shows. this new stuff is definitely different.
while not the end of the world for me it is clearly cheaper feeling and burns a bit different. i am more upset that I cant get the flash string anymore. now its like some kind of braided cord that burns wicked hot. i un braid it into 3 strands so that 1- I get much more use out it and 2- does not burn crazy. just my take on this. sam

Sorry but the shipped wet has bee the standard for over 20 years. I used to buy it in bulk from Theater effects. It was always wet as that was the shipping regulation.
If your dealer is drying it than that is their choice. Maybe your dealers are subbing something from India and to Nassua or there is some sort of Chinese knock off . I don't know, My personal stock from a few years ago is as it always was so I cant comment on the paper recently bought other than my experiences with paper batches going bad You have to consider that it is possible for a mass of paper to go out to all the jobbers which is then sold to all the dealers and could be everyone has the bad batch. But really I would have to see what you are getting to know if it is bad. Slow buring and with smoke would be a soaking issue. Brittle or fume smelling would be fixing. That is if it is dry. I have thought paper was dry and it burned slower. It just took a little humidity to change the burn rate. try extra drying even if you think it is dry and see what happens. |

This was stuff I bought on Penguin or some such big-name site--the larger sheets. It was dry, really. Just like the little pads they still sell (?) that are dry. Anyway, I think I overreacted! The paper I've dried out seems fine now. Thanks for the feedback, all.

Concerning this new flash paper!!
i recently (just last week) got my new flash paper shipment and by far this stuff SUCKS!!! it is thicker - thus causing it to burn slower it is more brittle - thus not great for origami or rolling up sparkle additive into it i got white sheets flash pads (which were just cut up sheets of the bigger sheets) (not a real pad anymore) i also got the colored flash paper -- which I actually make my own colored paper but wanted to try this,. they were all completely inferior to what I have used for the past 20 years!! this is horrible because I depend on the flash paper for my opening routine. the flash I produce has been perfected with sparkle and now it burns different and not happy. the bigger sheets are just so brittle that I cant fold them or shape them at all. my only hope is that we get back to the Nassau Chemical Corp flash paper! any one know if they will bring it back or if there is a way to get it? thanks

I just spoke to my supplier and the original company closed up shop and this is the best they can come up with for now.
there is a thicker flash paper that burns even slower but what my supplier is selling is called American Thin Paper its a shame cause this is no where near as good as the original stuff. bummer

I too have noticed the newer flash paper doesn't work as well as the older version. Wonder if the chemicals are different.
