I want to make a humanette - puppet body with my head - for a show I am creating. Has anyone done this, and is it easy? Any instructions out there? Or ready-made ones? Thanks.

Check out the Puppeteers of America website at www.puppeteers.org. There may be some information there. Also, I think Andrew Pinard did a lot of research on this too.
Martin Stevens had a full humanette act at one time, and I think Jay Marshall also did some work with them (but I'm fuzzy on that). There is also a great section in an old magic book, the name of which escapes me at the moment, that had what amounted to a full how-to on humanettes. I'll see if I can dig that out. Do you just want to have a puppet body/arms that you attach to yourself and have your head out the top?
I am a puppet builder.. PM me - I might be able to help you out. Damien |

I used one I built a few decades back. There are two basic types, as I recall. One type you put your hands in the feet and the arms on the body are operated by a second performer or are hooked to a pair of glasses/hat so that head movement gives them some animation. The other type operates the arms with your own and the legs operated with fishline attached to the arms down to the legs or operated by a second puppeteer.

I saw an illustration somewhere (One of the old vent books?) with the legs operated by fishline with rings attached to the fingers.

Guys, thanks for the input and advice. The show got canned before I got to stage it, but the idea is on hold, not abandoned. I may be in touch with some of you when the time comes. Tony

I'll bet that's where I saw it. I used to own the Batchelder book.

Thanks Harris. It is ordered. If nothing else, it will be good to have in the library.
