I purchased a small estate that had a old wood finger chopper. The props date into the early forties. The chopper has a brass blade and made with solid cherry and oak, both stained cherry only on the exposed sides. One of the panels has warped and the side fell off.
I believe this may be a original Massey. I have heard but cannot confirm Massey made his first run of choppers in wood then gave the rights to Max Holden who then made them in plastic. A Massey collector has looked at pictures and doesn't think it is a Massey, however he said it did look like other Max Holden items in his collection. I am not sure if Max Holden did any prototype work for Massey, it is know there was a good relationship between the two. Based on the chopper I have, I think the entire run of these wood choppers had the sides warp and were returned for refunds or thrown away. One of Masseys trademarks in the Chinese Flame Clock was the brass edging and the brass blade, quality of construction fit Masseys MO. Because the blade is so unique I am hoping there is someone that can help me ID this. The picture I attached shows the chopper opened. It was designed to be glued shut. Don't remember seeing a catalog mentioning this wood finger chopper. Of course Holden's and Massey were not around in 1958 to my knowledge. Back then everything was line drawing in magic catalogs.

I have Holden catalogs # 5,7,8 and the original Massey chopper was first shown in #8, 1943. It was a lot of fun going through the old catalogs. What you may think is new can be very old...

Pete, you might be right, this would be pre his split down the middle version. I do remember a friend of mine in magic, like finger choppers, and he had a wood and brass one. The blade always bend on him. Send a picture to Mickey Hades and see if he will verify it for you. If so, it would be from the 1960's or early 1970's.

I have an ancient Mickey Hades chopper from the 60s, but it has three holes and a "handle" on the top.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Thanks for the Micky Hades suggestion. I have sent him a email and will post his response.
