Wonderful choice!
Perhaps also Woody Allen, although his involvement and skills in our little craft is unknown to me

So many magician patted him on the back because they were in the film but this is not even Film School level. Maybe his first go he should have something he made for himself and his friends and passed it around. It is one thing to just try something but another to release it. He has enough money to have hired someone to properly film and direct it. |

Some people retire and take up gardening or painting. He just has more money than most so he took up film making. He got to play with his friends and have fun.

I saw this last week ago at a film festival in Iowa. While not a stellar piece of cinematography, I've seen far worse. Far, far worse. It's a fun film and a labor of love with lots of inside jokes. Magician's are going to like it, as long as they don't take it too seriously, and they will have fun spotting all of the magician's in secondary roles or just hanging out in the background. Plus you get to see Lance's Mansion.
I'm sure it's something that will get played at conventions for years to come. It might even make it to MAGIC Live. It did win several awards at the film festival. One for best Family film and another for costume. There were a couple of others as well but I can't recall what they were.

Say what you want about the film, but Lance is one of the nicest, most giving magicians around.

On the other hand, if I'm looking for someone to fix my car, operate on me or produce a feature film, being a nice and giving magician isn't the first qualification I would look for. Let's not make this into something it wasn't. He's not starting a production company to produce feature films. This was a chance for him to have fun playing with his friends and for that, I'm very happy for him.

You know that if Thurston made a movie and there were bit parts by Keller, the Davenports, Houdini, Dante, and anyone else (living or dead; I'm just listing random names)we've ever heard of, magicians would be going nuts over it even today. Starting in about twenty years, no self-respecting magician would dare to NOT have Lance's movie in their library. |

I am a 30+ year magician and performer and from the clips alone, I am sorry, I can t say I will LOVE it. It is just looks so poorly done that I don't know how you can stand the acting . I am sure you have not really seen "far far worse"
What I see is a bias for who is the star and whose friends are in it. I GUARANTEE your review would have bee FAR FAR FAR worse if you were not a fan or did not know the people in the video. When a few of us magicians saw some of the released clips , we looked at each other like "These are just test shots right, he has to know that is not good and needs to be worked out. " But it seems the quality did not get better. When you submit to film festivals you are looking for something being "just a hobby " project. You can not claim he thought it would be nothing more than an inside video. Once you start playing that video to all the conventions you might start hearing the REAL reviews that you would get if it was not "Lance Burton" and the stars of magic. Won awards? Oh my must have been some really bad or few entries. Quote:

Won awards? Oh my must have been some really bad or few entries. You must understand that film festivals have a certain hierarchy to them from Cannes on down the line. I'm guessing that this film festival in Iowa might not have been closer to the top of the list. People submit their films to as many festivals as possible and just keep going until it is accepted somewhere. The added bonus of Lance bringing the "cast" to this local festival had to play a role in the cache of it being selected for a showing. The smaller festivals have more trouble attracting films so they will frequently offer as many awards as they have entries. Again, it was a hobby project for him and if he had fun doing it, that's what matters.

We should all have hobby projects (even those of us for whom... magic is our livelihood).
My hobby project is watching bad magic themed movies! And I have seen a few!

I figured the film went away without us getting a chance to see it, but was quite wrong in that thought. It's now making the festival rounds and did very well in DesMoine a few days ago (Best Family Film, I believe).
I'm looking forward to it. It appears to be not only harmless fun, but an admirable fundraising vehicle for the Shriner's Hospitals. |

I can't understand why Lance Burton retired. In real, he continues working but on worse projects.. I really can't understand why a great magician retiring his show, in an age who he is still very creative, to pursuit worse things to do...

My understanding is the situation retired him. Can't say I blame him.
