Hello, folks. I'm new to this area in the Café; I know so very little about escapology. I've used the search function for this question and have been overwhelmed by hundreds of unrelated threads.
I know a technical theater director who's asked me to find a padlock that can release quickly without a key. It's for a scene in a show where someone picks a lock and pops it open. Any ideas or hints in the right direction would be kind of you. Feel free to send a PM if you feel responding here is revealing too much (I assume "All tied up!" is publicly searchable). Thanks. -Mike

Just to clarify, you don't need an escape artist item. What you need is a prop for the stage which is not necessarily used in an escape artist show.

There is a set of handcuffs on the market that can be released with the push of a button. Check joke, novelty, and magic shops. They are made to look like the real heavy regular handcuffs, these are not what I would consider a toy.
If you go to www.stoners.com, you might find them there, if not give the a call and see if they still have them in stock. |

Have your local locksmith remove ALL of the pins from a pin-tumbler padlock.....that way, the cylinder will turn & OPEN the padlock - by using any flat object that will enter the keyhole (i.e. insert bobby pin, and turn the cylinder, just as a key would).

I can do you a padlock with no pins. Just let me know what size body you would like, 40mm, 50mm or 60mm wide. I would thinki the biggest for stage use. I'll also provide a tiny tool to open it, or a regular pick so that it looks like your performer is a skilled lock picker. These are brass bodied padlocks, which are based on my Supalok series. Go to www.loxandkeys/supalok.html to get an idea of the design.

When you know how the Supa lock works and what he has to do to make them you realise that this "man" has some amazing skills! That was meant to all be on one post so it didn't look like I was slating Mick cus I am not! |
