For the unique routine, start looking: Hint Google, then even search more.
Van Cleve Cleve Haubold Search and ye may find one of the true founders of Bizarre. And, the funniest use of a finger chopper story ever. If you find it, do it as written - Don't screw it up!!!! TEB3 |

TEB3, thanks for this. I've searched the Café and googled Van Cleve, found a few entries that are definitely deserved of some more digging!
If I found the routine, Im not sure I'd want to it as written...since I didn't write it I'm guessing I couldn't do it justice and certainly wouldn't want to do what seems like a famous routine associated with someone else. I would love to see it, if only for the joy of watching it and maybe for some performance pointers. At the very least I've learnt a bit about a bizzarist that I hadn't really known about! Do you know of any books or film featuring Van Cleve? Sy |

I'll do some digging since I've got a copy somewhere. Two other "books" to try and find are "Van Cleve's Weird Magic", Books 1 & 2. These will be tricky to find as they were self-published in 1972 and 1980. Since Cleve also wrote the Elwood the Rabbit column for Linking Ring you may find some other clues in those if you know someone who has an old IBM collection.
Cleve, Dr. John Gladfelter, and Tom Palmer (Tony Andruzzi/Maskelyn ye Mage) were the trio of guys in Dallas that really created a lot of cutting edge stuff. Fortunately I was friends with all three and got to partake in some unusual brainstorming sessions. In real life, Cleve had at doctorate in theater and wrote children's plays. Lord know how many he churned out but Samuel French sure sold a lot of scripts to elementary schools all over the U.S. TEB3 |

Much appreciated!
I have a fair few old copies of TLR (thank god for auctions!) so I'll check those out tonight when I get home. I know of Tony Andruzzi, but none of the other guys you mentioned. I only started getting back into Magic about 8 years ago, and Bizzare/mentalism in the last couple of years so I'm soaking up everything I can. I get tons of ideas from TA Waters MM&M which I was lucky enough to get last year and I picked up some bundles of Magick magazine (again, a rather expensive auction find). Did Cleve write much for Magick? Sy |

I'm not aware of him writing anything for Magick. He died in 1996.
Tom Palmer was the real name of Tony Andruzzi. He changed it after he left Dallas and moved to Chicago. He was also Maskelyn ye Mage. Dr. John Gladfelter was a prominent Dallas psychoanalyst. All were friends through the link of magic including myself. We just thought differently about things. Cleve and John were the real brain trust behind a lot of Tony's most famous exploits. For more about Tom/Tony/MyM get a copy of Unspeakable Acts by Jim Magus. TEB3/Lary http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/teb3 |
