Whenever I start practising magic
one thought comes to my mind which completly destroys my Motivation. years ago ive had an accident where the tendon of the last pinky finger joint of my right hand snapped.. that means I cannot bend the top joint of my pinky anymore I can use it normaly but have no controll over the top joint. Now my question, does this small disablity effects card magic ? are there advanced techniques which NEED the use of the small pinky top joint ? i don't want to start REALLY getting deep into card magic and then after some time I cannot advance anymore because of this minor problem. many thanks in advance Ben |

G'day Ben
I know what this is like - sort of. My right hand little finger has the end chopped off - but in all other aspects it works fine. My left hand however is a worry - tendon damage has resulted in the little finger not being able to bend in any respect in the palm open position and serious restrictions in a half closed position which makes it impossible to use for some pretty basic sneaky card maneuvers. The thing is because I have been living with this situation for a long time now - I just found other ways (and other fingers) and other angles etc to do what was required. And I have no problems. In my opinion you should be able to get around things with no dramas and in the process perhaps come up with slightly different ways of doing things. BTW there are plenty of people who have physical restraints that have worked out how to get around things and present very entertaining magical effects. All the best with your magical journey Ben. BenR -- I would think that you would wind up having to find ways to adapt techniques to your situation, but this could be an advantage as well as a disadvantage. Because you can't always follow the standard directions, you'll wind up having to think outside the box. This will automatically put you out in front of magicians who simply do what everybody else is doing.
If you're wondering how far you can go in card magic, given your disability, watch Rene Lavand performing "Oil and Water" with only one hand: Then, watch Mahdi Gilbert do the same effect with no hands:
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

Wow, Talk about inspirational.
Mahdi Gilbert - Totally awesome. Proves what patience, dedication, practice and everything good in a person can accomplish. |

As can overhand injog shuffles (one of the most important things to know/do for close-up card magic), my Status Quo Shuffle, Lorayne Force, false cuts, double cuts, and just about every effect/routine/sleight I teach in all my books over the decades. So BenR, you can advance as much as you want to with that "minor problem."

djtrouten posted the video while I was merely going to mention a name. I don't have your issue, so I really can't understand, but I am always amazed at Rene Lavands work and demeanor. |

The top joint of my right pinky is immobile and hurts when I practice for long periods of time. That said, I just adapt the technique to this limitation. There are guys with much greater disadvantages who are better than I can ever hope to be. Don't be discouraged!
