The One & Only by Paul Harris & Tony MaClaren
---------------oOo----------------- Effect/Description: You remove a flat, invitation-size envelope from your pocket and dump out an "invisible deck". You direct a spectator to freely "destroy" these imaginary cards until only a single card remains. Let's say the Queen of Diamonds. The spectator tosses the invisible Queen of Diamonds toward the envelope. You. then slowly and cleanly remove the "one & only " card in the envelope. It's the spectator's "one &only" Queen of Diamonds. The Envelope is clearly seen to contain no other cards after the "one &only" card is removed. - The card in the envelope is always the exact card named by the spectator. - Uses just one envelope. - No palming, switching, or loading of the envelope. - Self-contained. - Resets in seconds. - Perform sitting, standing or while aimlessly wandering around. ----------------------------------- Inside the booklet of instructions you receive when purchasing The One & Only we are told how Paul Harris was inspired by Kenton Knepper's effect Kolossal Killer and this is what ultimately led to the developement of The One & Only. Then with a little help from his friends Tony MaClaren, Rod Whitlock and Tim Trono, the final product was born. That said, does the product live up to the promises made in the advertising copy above? Technically speaking, yes it does. But, this will take some practice to perform smoothly. While most good magic does require you to practice, some effects (routines) do come easier then others. While there is no sleight of hand involved here, there is some sleight of mind. Meaning, you will have to become very aware of the props you're using and have some decent audience management skills as well. This is not a bad thing at all, but could prove to be a bit challenging for the begining performer. To help you prepare for the challenges this particular effect offers, you are supplied with a very special set of gimmicked playing cards, an envelope and a fourteen page illustrated instruction booklet as mentioned previously. The booklet is well written and includes all the information you'll need to master the basic idea, which is what allows this trick to actually work as well as it does. In addition to the basic effect, several alternate handlings and presentations are explored leaving you the reader a bit of variety to choose from. Each routine is decent in its own right and most likely you'll find at least one variation that will fit your own particular needs and or style. But what about the props? Well, the cards supplied are special in a couple of different ways and I really can't say how without giving away too much as it were. Likewise, the envelope you receive is special and has been manufactured out of a very durable material which insures many a performance. However, should you wear the envelope out, replacements can be ordered, so no big worries there. Incidentally, I will point out that while it will take a little time and effort, I see no reason why you could not make your own replacement envelopes should the one supplied ever wear out. It's not that difficult to do. Finally, the effect is advertised as; An Invisible Deck presentation without the deck!. I'm not sure I totally agree with that statement but I do think the trick does have potential with the right presentation. Will you use this? Possibly, but I will point out that in my opinion, an actual Invisible Deck or even a Brainwave Deck can accomplish the same end result. That is, a thought of card is seemingly the only possible choice as shown by the proof the magician provides. Whether that evidence is a single card in an envelope or the only card reversed in the deck, I personally feel the strength of both ideas are just about equal. If you do not currently use an Invisible Deck in your show then this may well be worth a look.
