Did you catch the flaming straitjacket performed by Goodwin (The Illusionists) on America's Got Talent?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WmzAxTQQsuQ It was great seeing him as a flaming torch - I bet it was exciting for the live audience. However, it was over so quickly. Did adding the flames add to the USD escape? Also, for the observent- notice the difference between the jacket on Howie and Goodwin. Whatcha think? |

How long before some bloody basshole tries this at his own show and is hospitalized or burned to death?

Unfortunately, thanks to some previous discussion - I couldn't help but notice the arms...
Some here will know what I mean about how they were positioned - it's a shame. I am still struggling with this whole thing. The escape certainly had an extra visual and risk appeal that is not present in the "unadorned" USD SJ escape, but did it really add entertainment value that couldn't have been better achieved with other aspects of showmanship and theatrical devices? Considering the show and the restrictions that this type of vehicle brings - perhaps it fitted that production (for better or worse). Still, a solid professionally handled stunt. Entertaining? I guess the audience seemed to like it, but I'm not so sure. |

I think the bottom line is that Goodwin sold the fire, not the jacket.

Great summary, cliff. That nails my feelings.
I did like the billowing white "smoke" coming from the extinguisher as well as the one-handed triumphant hang at the end. In fact, the billowing cloud from the extinguisher was great theatrics. The camera work really portrayed his deep concentration and focus. The actual escape seemed to not really take place - it was too quick and obscured by the flames. He might as well be escaping from a sweater. However, it was something new and it was suspenseful. I cannot imagine him doing that everynight on The Illusionists show - looked like a good chance of the head and neck getting burnt as the jacket comes over the head. The placement of the fuel was very well thought out - obviously a lot of thought and testing went into this. As cliff mentioned, very easy to make a miscalculation and be in the hospital. |

Im Not Impressed w/ this so called escape or the theft of a friends idea .
my friend Michael Lee shared this Flaming SJ idea over 15 yrs ago w/ the late Norm Bigelow ! As Michael explained it , good idea , Not great , as escxape has to be done to fast to Avoid the flames. Michael Lee has worked w/ many in the movies and the stunt industry and had been throwing this idea around for some time , basically its a full body burn using 2 Burn suits - One is a fill Burn suit, the other is a Upper portion of a Burn Suit fabricated into a Strait jacket . as to protecting the face Michael said 2 methods could be utalized , a Burn hood ot in the case of Goodwin , what looked like an assnt was wiping sweat away was in reality an assistant applying flame gel to protect the face . Would hve been nice if Goodwin could have given credit where it due. |

Hi, Magic123,
I did notice the two burn suits (and the HUGE gloves). I don't know anything about FX burning; but I assume that burn gel isn't going to give great protection. No way I would do that - and certainly not nightly! I sure hope he's using the hood during the run of the show. I expect they did it the "spectacular" way for the TV show... Was Michael contacted for the show? |

Notorious for doing this to other acts as well. I have shared this info w/ Michael . The Illusionist must be very Proud ! M123 |

Not to make excuses for anyone, but it seems like in the magic business everybody steels.
Copperfield robs James... Some devil takes my work and puts it on TV And now Goodwin takes something else. One magic stunt robbery victim I know just shrugged his shoulders and took the attitude of, "that's how it goes." That does not make it right, but with out specific copyrights, I don't think there is much we can do.

Ideas cannot be copyrighted. Scripts can. You can also patent a process, but not an idea. Of course patenting something allows anyone to see it (it is published so the public can read) so magicians are loathe to do that. I had an acquaintance who was a bellydancer and simultaneously balanced a sword on her head. Now everyone does it.
I have a magic act where all my scripts are original to me, and I only use one marketed trick. I don't think that most magicians do that. Tricks and DVD's come with people telling magicians: "Okay, here's what you say with this trick." They also come with the instructions "Use these sleights to accomplish this effect, and do the sleights in this order." My point is that magic is by its nature derivative. I didn't invent the finger palm or the riffle shuffle. I'm not sure ideas can be stolen, as they are not property. People feel betrayed when someone steals an idea, especially if they get famous for it. Given the questionable moral nature of magicians, the very practice of which involves deception, it's not surprising that people lift ideas from other people. If you're a person with good ideas and follow thru though, someone else isn't going to be able to get very far on one stolen idea.

Look at how many inventions of DeKolta, LeRoy, Maskelyne and Keller are still features of modern illusion shows.
