I occasionally read old magic books for several reasons:
1) to discover how my perceptions of “what is magical” has changed, 2) to find something I may have missed before, or is more relevant now, 3) to understand the thinking that went into the development of the effect. and because there is nothing on TV worth watching today One such book is “Al Schneider Magic” that can be acquired for small change as an eBook. There are dozens of fine effect that one can perform, but the developmental thinking is worth the read: Original Matrix, Street C&B, many coin, cards, and combinations thereof, etc. but each is grounding the exploring the difference between the "Intention of Reality" and the "Intention of Magic." For me the lesson for those now to magic is: “If you don’t intend magic to occur it will not – the observer will conclude something else.” Many performers today do seem to desire shock, skill admiration or “gotch” as a desired result. Maybe that is what today’s audience wants or expects. Your choice. But, is one desires to prompt a response of “so that is what magic looks like” then this is one of the many books to be read. For example, he explores why an effect fails to produce the desired reaction (whatever that is). One of these is, “What if the person does not care?” Do you care? What do they care about instead? How can you make them care about what you are doing? Do you Intend magic to happen? questions worth exploring.

A search shows this is about $40.00 as an PDF ebook and more than twice that in hardbound. (L&L)
I got mine on a special sale -- maybe AL will do that again. yet, at more that 600 pages with effects that each sell for $20 or more it is a value -- plus the theory.

This book is great, especially the last section where he details his best tricks. I got an ebook version from the llepub website on one of their 60% off sales - one of the best magic values around.
