Is there anyway to block all these "advertising" private messages I get from magiccafe staff? Everytime I log on this website, I get a new "private message" that ends up just being a staff member shilling for new product.
First, it is very distracting, because I have to constantly distinguish between real messages from friends, and just commercial messages of effects I am not interested in. Second, I find this routine lacking class. If you want to advertise, just create a page here that we can visit that lists all the new magiccafe recommendations. Otherwise, it gives this website a "used car salesman" vibe, and really cheapens my experience. -2cents |

This is one of the ways the Café is able to remain a free service to us all and we agreed to it when we joined.
If you already know it is probably a sales PM then you shouldn't be too disappointed when it is not a PM from a non-staff member. Just click on it and if it is not of interest go back about your business. No big deal. I don't find it lacking in class but finding fault with a free service seems a little crass to me so we all have our own ways of seeing things. -Mary Mowder |

This topic arises from time to time. Most recently here:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=40 Here is a little help in telling the ads apart from general member PMs. The ads always come from the owner here, Steve Brooks; and are noted as such in the "from" section of the listing of your PMs. The ads also generally have an icon, which is often animated, to the left of them, as opposed to the empty box which general member PMs have. These details instantly indicate which posts are the ones causing you such distress. |

Ddamen, you should read the rules before complaining about things. They specifically state that you will receive PM's of this nature and you agreed to accept them when you registered as a member of the Café. As Tom stated, these PM's will always come from Steve Brooks so they are easy to distinguish. At the bottom of the message, it says delete this PM.
YOU may not be interested in the effect being discussed but many of our members are. You are not the only member and this is the only way that Steve can reach all of the members at one time. He is not advertising but passing on information about new releases that may not be available to our members. This is a small price to pay to enjoy the rest of this FREE site.

If it were his products then it would be advertising but since all of the products discussed are creations by others, they are informational heads up notices. Regardless, you have your answer to the original post.

I am one of many who find the broadcast messages annoying and wish they were part of a separate forum instead of coming in the form of "private" messages, but it's the price we pay to use the forum for free and it's not an exorbitant one. I do believe a separate forum would do the job just as well, but the forum belongs to Mr. Brooks and it's his call, not ours.
