Hi Xavior
Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise with us this week! I loved what you said about "creating a very new magician" in your post about creating a spectator. You are very right... we tend to fall into 'worn sheep paths' and do not think creatively outside the box when it comes to our patter and opening lines. Would you be willing to share your insights into how you might teach us a new and creative approach for spectators to have their own magical experience with classics like - Dr Daley's Last Trick - The Ambitious Card Routine Thanks for any ideas you might share! Thanks for spending some time MagicMason.
There are two aspects to what I'm truly talking about and they can overlap a bit but I'm speaking more from the "off the cuff" stand point. Meaning not a stage show or a paid event. In that respect the magic should be and feel like its happening at that moment. Not that its planned. For instance recently while hanging out with my good friend Tony Chang we were talking about just this. Before the conversation started we were just catching up because I was traveling for a bit and haven't had a chance to really hang out or talk with him. During that conversation we started talking about music and his eyes lit up and he, while we were still talking, began going into his jacket looking for something and said so I bought this and I'm starting to learn how to make music. What he pulled out was a mini synthasizer. He explained how it worked a bit and let me listen to what he was working on. Seemed like a normal thing to do if you think about it. We're talking and something reminds him of something that he cares about and wants to share and he does just that. With magic tho we don't seem to look at it the same way we feel that we have to begin by introducing things a certain way to make it seem "natural" (there is no such thing as natural in magic- I'll make another post about that) but in so doing you create an atmosphere for a challenge or an uncomfortable atmosphere because instead of sharing something you have now made it all about your ego. You want to show me this and you're going to follow my directions. There's no sharing happening its now the magician showing the spectator. And then the typical phrases only worsen the problem by giving your audience or spectator "weapons" with which to use against us. The approach to magic in this sense is all about your intention. How can you make it part of something happening, an example of something on your mind. How can you make it feel relevant to the topic at hand? Because of the type of magic I'm talking about there is not one way to handle it but I'll try my best to give an example. With Dr. Daley's Last trick perhaps the conversation may be about memory or gambling where you use distraction as a way for the casinos or how your mind plays tricks on you. Conversations about memory seem to come up a lot if you listen closely. People say oh I forgot this or I forgot that. And that is your moment to talk about how our minds are fragile and can create a memory where there wasn't one there and then weave this effect in. Im sure its not the best example but I think you can grasp the concept fully. I hope that answers your question and again than you for taking the time MagicMason! |

Thank you Xavior... that is extremely helpful. Going with what is going on in THEIR life and then connecting that with a piece of magic that I LOVE really makes so much sense gives the magical moment a sense of adventure rather than a canned rigid presentation. Wow. Excellent!

MagicMason sent me a private message and I asked if it was ok to post because it may make things a bit more clear for everyone or they may have the same question.
MM: Hi Xavior - I think you answered my question about Dr Daley and Ambitious card (just two classic examples) of how you might approach magic.... is it that ... what is is I TRULY LOVE ABOUT DR DALEY AND THE MAGIC THAT COMES FROM IT... is what I then communicate to others? XS: Yes and no, you first have to love the effects, if you love the effects you'll know how to bring it up and share it. Think about it like this (as far as intention is concerned) Have you ever spoken to someone who's talking about something you have no interest in but they are so sincere and passionate about it that you listen to them and before you know it you're talking with them and are now part of their experience? If your answer is yes then that's what I'm mean. Approach it from the heart and let your passion out. Don't just do a sequence of moves and memorized lines. Let who you are out with them and let them fall into the world you create with your passion. If that makes sense MM: That makes total sense! I think your ideas are awesome and in some ways... are leading us through the wardrobe into a new world of Narnia. I really like that... let what I love (first) dovetail into their world and make a magical moment (second). Is that right? XS: If what you love is truly magic, then they will experience that as well. Thanks again MagicMason! |
