I remember C. Thomas Magrum doing a 12 ring routine in his school assembly program, back in the '40s. I THINK it was the Herman Hanson routine.
I never did rings until JAY Marshall sold me a set of Merv Taylor rings about 1970. I worked out a 5 ring routine, and tried it out in '71 in the high school show. I was AMAZED at how strong it was! In a few weeks it played strong enough that I could have closed with it! Then, Karrell Fox gave me his 3 ring routine about 1975. I tried it, and have used it since, When Karrell died, I inherited his rings and his two Mardo/Sterling Egg Bags, made by Busby. I enjoyed, and learned some GOOD STUFF when I read Pete Biro's "The Real Secrets of The Chinese Linking Rings"! I saw JNeal do his 2 ring routine on Johnny Carson in '85. WOW! (I aint that good!!!!!!!!!!!!) --I tried being "swayve & deboner" when I was 21! (I wasn't!)

The rings are so strong I have closed with them. Pete put a picture of me doing rings in his book and Levent published an original unlinking of mine in his dvds.
Oh, my friend we're older but no wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

The "t" configuration you referred to I believe is the "Chefalo Cross" described on page 215 of Pete Biro's outstanding "The real secrets of the Chinese linking rings" book. No need to hold a ring in your mouth; the top ring goes over the head. The configuration involving a ring in the mouth is a chain of 8 with a regular k** ring. If your rings are at least ten inches, you can slip the ring over your head instead of having to use your mouth. One reason why the rings endure is that there are so many effective variations of the effect and presentation possibilities. I am one of the few I know who use a seven ring routine. Levent in his 4 DVD set presents many possibilities involving the use of ten or more rings, which often involve use of one or more l*****g k** rings. Two and three ring routines have a very different feel from routines with more rings and seem almost like a completely different effect. Music or silence, absence of patter, slower and more majestic handling, less interaction with the audience, more mystical, and a sense of artistry tends to characterize the two and three ring routines more in the style of Richard Ross. Routines with many rings tend to be more interactive, high energy, verbal, noisy, rely more on the personality of the performer, and are more likely to have comic overtones. Some added dimensions are possible which can add to the magic, including use of chains, substitutions, and examination of some rings. |
