Hi,
i know you can do this with various phpbb mods, and in drupal too...does this site allow the functionality to hide certain users from threads? I think it would be a useful function, especially so you don't have to read endless comments from professional trolls that inhabit this place... thanks, iain

No, it's not possible on the Café and would defeat the intended lines of communication. If you hid a member and someone else responds, it would disrupt the discussion. Best you can do is just scroll past those "troll" comments.

Yeah, but the professional trolls on here constantly derail and cause argument after argument, scrolling past puts the onus on the user... they have a negative impact on the place (and the threads)...its like saying "ignore the bully" when really being able to zap them out of existence is better for everyone...
shame you don't have the facility...feel free to delete my question, thanks

Your question is fine but I think you're missing the point. If you start hiding comments (and it would have to be per member and not a blanket block) it would make the topic nonsensical. Even trolls get responses so let's say you block him. later in the topic, someone who doesn't have them blocked posts a response. It may not be a big deal in a short topic but if it's a good discussion, the continuity of the topic would be lost.
You can always report a "troll's" post. we could then look at the entire topic, make any changes or deletions necessary, and put the troll on a watch list.

One could presume that this Café user (who "ignored" another member) would be comfortable not reading the obscured posts, and perhaps being slightly confused as to the direction the thread was going as a result - as they freely choose to "ignore" a member, and forgo reading their posts.
For the 99.999% of the Café who DIDN'T put the poster on "ignore", the thread would read as perfectly normal. Folks on internet forums who choose to "ignore" another poster rarely (if ever) respond or engage with the "ignored" poster anyway, meaning no actual conversation is ever lost. As Dave suggests, here on the Café I just scroll right past posts from members I'm not fond of reading, although in some professional forums related directly to my career, I make heavy use of the "ignore" feature in order to maximize my ability to absorb relevant information from posters that I AM interested in knowing what they think. It may also be that not all posters whom one chooses to "ignore" are actually any form of troll worthy of being reported to Management. In many cases these "ignored" folks are overtly trying to change direction of a thread, have an agenda that is distasteful to the person putting them on "ignore", or otherwise present themselves in a way that conflicts with a Café members ability to enjoy the Café. Indeed, most folks I have on "ignore" in the forums related to my job aren't trolls at all, but they distract from my enjoyment reading any given thread, and I choose not to entertain their writing or thinking. |
