For several years now, Ron Bauer's website has been promising to release script "#20 That's the Spirit!". Since it is still unavailable, I am trying to research the effect. I am familiar with the basic rising pencil effect from Scholastic magic books I read as a kid. I would like to know if anyone has developed the idea past the basic concept however. I understand that the Bauer script is based on a routine originally released in New Tops, but I don't know which issue. If anyone knows which issue it was, or has any other relevant info, I would be very appreciative.
Thanks! |

Is this what you are referring to?
Sympathetic Wands by Ramos. This goes beyond the simple effect. https://tricksupply.com/product/sympathetic-wands-ramos/ My advice, why not send an email to Ron Bauer, he can't do anything less then not respond. Your email may even spark him to finish the booklet. Isn't this in Tarbell? I am asking as it has been years since I read those books. I know it is usually included in most beginner books found in book stores. |

I've always liked the Rising Wand in Bottle. I'm guessing that you're talking about the version in many beginners' magic books. This link
https://www.facebook.com/338764602812514......&theater should take you to a jpeg from the IBM Ring 103 Norfolk facebook page that shows a scan of a brochure from Silvan's show that included some simple beginner's magic tricks. You might want to use a bottle that looks a little more unique than, say, a soda bottle. Something like a clear flower vase for a single rose. That would look a little more mysterious than a soda bottle. One way to expand the use of the trick is to first make the wand rise out of the bottle and then take the wand to make something appear or disappear--maybe waving it at a Square Circle or other production device--or maybe waving it at The Magic Coloring Book to make the colors appear. If you have an assistant, the assistant could be holding the bottle and you gesture at the bottle she's holding to make the wand rise. Another way to expand the use of the trick is to segue from the wand rising out of the bottle to the classic effect of making a ring or plastic bracelet rise up and down the wand while you hold the wand in your hand. As beginners' tricks go, this one is strikingly visual. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Thanks Bill and Amado.
I suppose it would make more sense to just go straight to Ron. He seems like a good guy. I had forgotten about the Sympathetic wands,.... I can think of some interesting presentational hooks for that. I think that part of my interest in the trick is that it was probably the first trick I ever learned when I was 6 or so. I probably didn't fool anyone with it, but still...it was what got me started on the magic path. Would be nice to develop it into a complete routine. |

Hi Experimentalist,
You can find Ron Bauer's "Spirits" in the September 1983 issue of Genii. It's sort of a combination of the Rising Pencil and the Prayer Vase. You can get the basics from the Genii article, but the upcoming Private Studies book will go into much greater detail, and include RB's full Performance Script. Also, you can check out RB's full bibliography here: http://www.thinklikeaconjurer.com/insideinfo/biblio.htm |
