Hello all,
My name is Jonas Percy. I live in Pasadena and work as an editor in Hollywood. I began playing with magic as a child but lacked the foresight to practice every day. I probably would have been pretty good by now. I picked magic up only to put it back down and pick up something else. I did that repetitively for years. I just turned 35 and I'm finally in a place where I feel confident and comfortable with who I am and what I want from the interests in my life. I seem to have filtered out all the hobbies that were short term. I spent the first third of my life sampling anything I could wrap my time around, now it's time to spend the other two thirds becoming an expert at the ones that stuck. Magic is still here. Drumming and guitar are here. Juggling is here. Search and Rescue, and mountaineering are here. Video editing is here. Volunteering as an EMT is here. Those things energize me as much as they ever have and fill me with new life. So every day I will touch them. Even for just a second. A fortune cookie once told me that little and often make much. Well, at last, I'm old enough to know better and old enough to have a long-term attention span. Every day I will practice magic. Even if it's only for 5 minutes, 2 minutes, 30 seconds on some days... I will touch it every day. So 20 years from now I will not be saying I didn't have the foresight. I will not be saying, "I coulda been pretty good by now if I stuck with it" I never want to say those words again. I'm glad to be here at the Magic Café. I'm looking forward to learning from all of you and hopefully meeting some of you. My favorite styles and practices are dark comedy, card effects, card manipulation, mentalism, mind reading, mask work, hand-made effects, and gore (but with a touch of class). My influences are Rob Zabrecky, David Blaine for his street style, and Old-School Criss Angel (back when he did his basement shows in NYC with monster costumes and contortionists). I'm looking forward to diving in and discovering more influencers who trigger my feels and inspire me to develop my own sense of style. JP |

Welcome The Mighty Percy,
Thank goodness you're doing gore "with a touch of class" LOL I can attest that in Magic and Juggling "A little often" does "make much". Best of luck. -Mary Mowder |

Welcome to the Café man.
That's an impressive list of skills! It's never to late to do what we love, just put your heart at it. Off course the more you practice, the better you will be. Remember Bruce Lee words: I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. I'm sure you will find a lot of people here to exchange ideas and experiences. The Café is full of very helpful people. Since you like mentalism and mind reading I suggest you check Derren Brown. He's my model for what a mentalist should look/be/say/do, a lesson in showmanship. Cheers, Max Hazy

Welcome The Mighty Percy,
Good to have you as part of the Café. Nice skill set! I too am a guitarist, into horror and gore makeup and mask design, as well as dabble in video editing. I worked full time as a magician throughout my 20's and early 30's and fell on some hard times (family death and divorce) which took me outta my head for a bit ( I too have attention issues as well as Asperger's) and it was only the constant practice and creation of new effects that kept me going, even though I was no longer performing. Fast Forward to present day, I'm now 45 and find myself re-inventing my entire Magic persona and actually becoming more ME, and recently (6 months) ago decided to get back into the art full time. It's been very tough financially but thankfully I have my soulmate/muse that keeps pushing me to never give up on The Dream. It can be tough but there seems to be a lot of helpful people here at the Café. I wish you the best and look forward to see future things from you. As for your interest in mentalism, I would recommend checking out Peter Turner, there is a lot of controversy about his effects being rubbish and not working, but I can tell you first hand, that they do work and they are pure miracles (if one takes the time and has the guts to dive into it) Take Care, MJ |

Great welcoming crew. Thanks for your words Max. Bruce Lee has always been one of my major idols. I will take those words and run with them. And thank you for the reference to Derren Brown. I'll check him out. I love your youtube video by the way. I just learned the old way of separating the reds and blacks, but your video has me stumped! I wouldn't know where to start with the participant actually shuffling. Great job! Fun to watch and inspirational. Your training is evident!
friend2cptsolo, Thank you for the reference as well! I will check out that topic. And semajmagic, Thank you for your welcome and thank you for sharing your story with me. I went through a hard couple years with my own wife from about 2012 to 2014. We almost ended it, but somehow pulled through just as the last straw was about to break. Fortunately we are much stronger and both different people for the better after that ordeal. I'm sorry to hear about the pain you faced. But as you say, there's nothing like some hard reality to humble you and make you take a long hard look at yourself and say who the **** am I? Then you figure it out. That's how I got into Search and Rescue. I trained day and night while I was struggling with my wife. It gave me something else to focus on and took the pain away. It pushed me to my limits and stripped me down to my core. From there I had no choice but to rebuild anew. I'm glad to meet you. I wish you the best with your soulmate and your renewed interest in this beautiful art. I will see you around! And thanks for the reference to Peter Turner. I'll check him out. |

I'm making an e-book featuring a concept I came up with based on a psychology concept called "repetition blindness". My version of OOTW (which rely on this concept) will be in this e-book. The e-book itself will be called Codex Tenebris and the OOTW is the 3rd effect. If you're interested, keep an eye for it. I think it will be worth it... And the concept can be used in pretty much all OOTW you can think of (among other things, as I'll show in the book). Cheers, Max Hazy

Welcome YeMightyPercy and let me just say that you're not too late arriving at magic again. You're 35 years old? Dang, I can very vaguely recall being 35 more than a couple of decades ago AND I've just recently taken my own trip to presenting magic with great passion. I've been doing things magical for a little over three years AND it was musical magic on guitar and keyboard that previously and presently keeps my hands and fingers nimble.
I've not actually used gore or horror with any of my musical or magical presenations, but I've always been a great afficianado of the macabre. The old magazine, "Famous Monsters of Filmland" with Forest Ackerman was my monthly bible study class. I saw amateur Rick Baker submitting photos of his latex rubber creations as a teenager, which was long before he won his first of many Accademy Awards for make-up for the movie, "An American Werewolf in London." ANYWAY.. I ramble. Welcome to the Café. It looks like you're finding lots of friends and others of like-mindedness. Better late, then never and better magic sleight of hand, before arthritis lack of handiness sets in.
Magic is believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can make anything happen.
