Ran across a trick in the book "Magic with Everyday Objects" by George Schindler called "The Missing Number". Spectator writes down a number of several digits, scrambles the same digits, subtracts the smaller from the larger, and then calls out the resulting digits in any order, leaving one digit out. You tell them the missing digit. Can anyone familiar with this tell me how to handle a result such as 9900? If they leave out one of the zeros, the method seems to work. If they leave out one of the nines, it seems to not work. Any help appreciated.

One approach is to tell your audience, "Don't circle a zero, because that's already a circle." (Used here: http://www.digicc.com/fido/) If the rest of the number is a multiple of 9, then they must have circled a 9.
Another approach to is to say something like, "I'm not getting anything yet...heh, it's not a zero, is it?" If they say yes, you can say, "I thought so!" If they say no, you now know it's a 9, and you can say, "I didn't think so." Note that the "It's not a..." phrasing is key to making this approach work. A few other sources related to this trick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbBymb4NU38 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td4G09AwQQo https://pidaymagic.wordpress.com/magic-r......s-grime/ Notice the first link above uses the subtraction approach, while the latter resources use a multiplication approach instead. Harry Lorayne has a 3rd approach (also involving multiplication) for the missing digit trick, which you can find in his book "Mathematical Wizardry" under "The 'Missing Digit'" and/or the June 1995 issue of Apocalypse as "Additions to HaLo's Revenge". |

This book was updated and reprinted as "Secrets of Mental Math", where it can also be found in the "Missing Digit Tricks" section of chapter 9. |
