Getting ready to do some wood playing card boxes for a special project. I think this is the smallest boxes I have built. Plan to do them in walnut. Thinking the edges will be 3/16" x 1/2"stock and the faces of the box will be 1/16' Baltic birch with walnut veneer. Going to need a pretty strong joint at the bottom corners as one end will be open. Thinking of a double lap or lap butt joint. Thought the folks in here might have some tips. My first thought was to set up a router table with a Dremel tool but don't think its enough power and to hard to adjust. My full size router table seems to be a little overkill. Table saw with custom sled and fine blade? Tips on glue up would be help full as well, Thanks

With your 1/16" plywood faces you'll have a plenty strong box. I would do a simple rabbet joint on the other two corners but mainly for alignment purposes.
I'm assuming the box is open at one end like a playing card box. You can cut the rabbet on your table saw. |

I use 1/4 inch wide rubber bands for gluing up the boxes I make and they work quite well.

Hey Gimpy
I would cheat and do the miters on my chop saw (Just make sure you have a good blade for a clean cut. An alternate idea depending on the wood you have on hand: Use a true 1" piece of wood and rout a pocket in it open to one end. Take a piece of laminated ply and fit it to the top Box with open top. Dan's use of rubber bands would be my go to however I have also used old inner tubes from a bicycle when I cant find a rubber band. (Im kind of impatient at times!) please share pictures when it is done. |
