I am going to NYC next week during a weekday, the whole fam, 2grandparents,1brother and sister inlaw and 2 kids under age 3. We will end up downtown in TimesSquare to poke around a bit there. I was thinking of going to FANTASMA magic, mostly because I know of their products from when I was younger and they have a little Houdini museum in shop. I looked on the website and I am a little unimpressed by the selection, mostly just little kit magic; this and that. I am not sure what I was expecting either. I am sure they are a fine shop but I not sure if I will really get anything out of the visit there.
Has anyone been? What is it like and what is the experience like? And is there anything, better suited to our group, to go do that is magic related in the city? |

Hello,
This is my opinion, but Fantasma magic I found interesting, for the memorabilia and such, although I've only been there once in recent years and it's not like it was a decade ago. The last time I was there it had moved floors to a smaller space and it was a different vibe. Years ago my wife and I would spend hours there conversing with and being entertained by David Roth, Magick Balay, and others like Simon Lovell; on my most recent visit two years ago we were in and out in 15 minutes. That said, they do have an inventory of various items of all experience levels. Not sure what day you are in Manhattan, but on Friday evenings there most likely is a showing of Steve Cohen's Chamber Magic at the Waldorf Astoria (I do not think it has switched hotels yet), which is absolutely fantastic, however children under twelve are not permitted if I recall correctly. If you at all have the opportunity though, I highly recommend it if you've not experienced it before. Enjoy your trip to the city! Carter |

There is also Tannen's magic which is the oldest shop in the city.

There is also Tannen's, though I've not been there in a very long time.

I don't remember how to get in touch - but there used to be a Magic Round table- for LUNCH some where in Manhatten- - Wife and I went there in the 70's = and I hear they still meet (somewhere)maybe Tannens could tell you (thats where we were invited) - My wife can speak Italian and their Sceretary was italian- the members had her speak only Italian so that the Sec. would interpret- at the end of the Lunch - My Wife told him "thank you-we had a wondrful time" in english -he got a little upset, but the gang had a great time- we still have the membership card they gave us with all the signatures of the group. Yeah So I did get to go to Tannen's it was good but not great, the shop is nice and the staff was awesome still left me wanting to do something like the last 2 post but I go back to NYC a few times a year and will hopefully get a chance to explore some more magic related stuff around the city.
Thanks for the posts I will post further ahead next time. The highlight of Tannen's was they have a framed letter from Houdini. Some other customers came by to see it, they had some information about some off beat stuff to do in NYC. I ended up purchasing "The Key" Wayne Dobson.... it is a really neat tricky effect. It is a bit different than most anything I perform now just because I usually do story telling magic and base that a little on the spooky side..... This effect seems very light hearted to me. Plus I have been wanting to come up with story-like presentations that are more kid friendly and family friendly. I posted in the WORDS WE USE section http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......c=636697 |

If you do plan on going to either or both of the shows I mention, buy tickets early. They sell out weeks in advance.
