I'm looking for metal tubes for a project, pretty much exactly like those that came with my appearing bottles. About 12 in tall, 3.5 in in diam and fairly light gauge metal. I see various raw metal sources on the internet, but wondering if anyone has gone down this road and can give me any advice about gauge, material (steel, alum, stainless), seamless and sources. Is there a hidden in plain site source other than plastic waste pipe (PVC) that I am missing?

First, one end is crimped so duct sections can be connected. It is far easier to cut metal flat than after it has been formed. It can be done, but you'll spend a lot of time cleaning up the raw edge. Second, galvanized metal requires special painting techniques. I won't detail here now because you do have other options, like covering with contact paper, etc. You can also invest in a cheap slip roller and make your own by soldering or spot welding sheet metal, which can also be found at Home Depot, Menards, etc. You can also look at extruded acrylic tubing from a company like this... http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23401

Sharing an answer to my own question. IKEA carries a variety of toilet brush holders that are metal tubes. Some... like the picture attached... are bottom-less tubes because it comes with a slide-out plastic liner that has a bottom. They come in a variety of finishes, including chrome. The ones with metal bottoms can be a little tricky removing the bottom because it is rolled into the sidewall edge. They all run about $10 and you get a toilet brush to-boot.

Found another source. This one is a very nice plastic material. Rugged but not thick or heavy. And only $7. You can just get 12.5 inches in length out of this. Cut beautifully on the chop saw with a plywood blade. ID is right about 3 - 3/8 in.

Caution - I learned the hard way that the cup dispenser in the post above is ever so slightly tapered - maybe 1/4 in change in ID over a 12 in length. It isn't really visible to the eye and it didn't prevent me from using it for my purpose but I had to orient it a certain way to work best.
