This just in, according to the Washington Post:
LIONS AND TIGERS TO BE BARRED? OH MY. Just a few weeks ago, Congress held hearings about steroids in sports, making it clear to Major League Baseball in particular and sports leagues in general that their current standards were just not good enough. While it can fairly be debated whether or not the pro leagues in the U.S. are doing enough to combat steroids, many people wondered why our elected Representatives were not addressing other issues that are far more pressing to most people's lives. Considering all that is going on in the world and this country, such as terrorism, the drug war, the economy, unrest in various nations, and the Iraq situation, among others, many Americans wondered just why Congress was investigating steroid use by mulitmillionaire professional ballplayers, an issue that does not directly touch on the average American's life. Following closely on the heels of that, there are new reports that the folks on Capitol Hill are at it again. Spurred in large part by last year's tiger attack on magician Roy Horn, and also by pressure from animal rights groups such as P.E.T.A. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) the Commerce Committee of the U.S. Senate is considering holding hearings on the use of animals in live shows. "Wild animals such as tigers belong in the wild, in Africa, not in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas!" said P.E.T.A. member Al Symers. "It is about time that the government took steps to end this insanity." When asked for comment, Committee Chairman Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) said, "Magicians have got to get it. I don't want to act legislatively. I have great respect for Siegfried and Roy. Of course, I'm frustrated. I'd like to see them adopt some standards. However, failure to commit to addressing this issue straight on and immediately will motivate this committee to search for legislative remedies." Magicians Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn, of the legendary magic act "Siegfried and Roy" were unavailable for comment. Their act is one often cited by P.E.T.A. as being unfair to animals, and the one being used by the animal rights group as a lightning rod for the Congressional hearings, in the wake of the attack by one of their tigers on Roy Horn last year. Other Senators on the Committee refrained from commenting on the issue. When reached at his home in Illinois, a magician who wished to be identified only by his stage name "Pogo the Clown" called P.E.T.A. a "group of loonies and punks who have no idea what they are talking about and should keep their noses out of our business." It was not immediately clear if "Pogo" spoke for magicians as a whole. Regarding the rumored hearings, Senator McCain said the Committee would issue a statement sometime today "that would make things much clearer."

I don't know about magicians as a whole, but Pogo certainly speaks for me!
PETA once again proved it didn't know what they were talking about when they said, "Wild animals such as tigers belong in the wild, in Africa, not in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas!" I was just in Caesar's Palace yesterday, and I was hard pressed to find any trace of wild animals in there, except for the exotic fish in the Race For Atlantis aquarium. They are indigenous to Asia. But then PETA has shown time and time again that it really knows very little about the animal kingdom and its inhabitants

I really hope this gets to Congress. Then Siegfried and Roy can attest to the fact (not factoid, but fact) that they have helped perpetuate several rare species of large cats. The awards these two men have gotten from sensible animal control groups are numerous.
McCain has revealed his true colors on this one. I must confess that I am a member of PETA PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS

I'm an animal lover. I was raised by animal lovers. And even I think PETA are a bunch of wackos.

If the animals were being abused then that would be one thing, but that just sucks. True the animals do belong in the wild, but the animals are taken care of some times better than zoo animals. And Roy wasn't "attacked" either (if you know the whole story about his heart attack and everything). I say they learn what they're talking about before they try to say how everyone else is wrong.

Folks, I may be wrong but look carefully at the date of the original post. I suspect a little April Fools foolery.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the link to the direct article?

No, it would not. Because, as Blackwood deduced, this was complete hooey. April Fool's, folks.
I think I did a pretty *** good job of fabrication on that one. And trust me, there are several hints in the article itself that would tell you it was not real. :-) Alan

Hehe, funny.
But seriously, modern magicians are way more humane to their animals than they were say 100 or 200 years ago. I was reading about an old italian magician who used to do a white and black dove thing where hed cut the heads of the birds off, then place them in a box and theyd come back to life but with the wrong colored head. The secret was he used 4 doves. |

The very amusing thing to me is I sent that "article" out to my friends via email as well as posting it here. The fast majority of my friends who responded did so with disgust and disdain for what the Congress was doing. Says something, don't you think, that if presented vaguely realistically, people will believe this of the government? Besides the fact that the name of the PETA rep should have been a clue, and the stage name of the magician in the story was also a more obscure clue. I will let you folks figure those out. (But with the first it helps if you say it out loud....)

Dangit...I thought all along it was a hoax until Blackwood's post...lol...that's what I got suckered on. ::sigh::
I promised myself this would NEVER happen...::pout:: Oh well, I'm over it. Ironically, I believe the premier of Season Two of Bullsh*t tonight on Showtime is about PETA. E

TThat would make sense.
What surprised me is how few people got the two fictitious names in the article, Al Symers and Pogo the Clown. Say the first one out loud. Then laugh. Then google the second one. And don't kill me. :-) Alan

HAHHAHAHAHAHAH...I can't BELIEVE I didn't catcht the J.W.G. reference. Somehow his, ummm, "performing name" slipped my memory.
Sadly, there are a couple of seemingly AUTHENTIC clowns performing under the name Pogo The Clown...wow...think I'd rethink my moniker. Next: "How To Cook w/ Chef Dahmer!"

Mister E, seriously? They perform under that name? My guess is that they are young an unaware of the stigma attached to that name. And good to know that you caught it. Not many people did. Which is understandable, but my one friend who is a psychologist and into that sort of thing, well, I let her have it for missing that one. She was so embarrassed.

TO be fair, the performer is not from the U.S. so is likely not at all aware of the stigma. I mean...c'mon that's like Bundy's Auto Repair...Gein's Butcher Shop....

Ah, well, if they are not from here, fair enough.
I like your other ideas. Here are some more: Holmes' Architecture. DeSalvo's Plumbing. Ramirez Security. Manson Camp for the Young. Fish Day Care. Berkowitz Park & Ride. And of course....Lucas Travel :-) Alan P.S. If you are into reading on this subject, drop me a PM. We can compare notes and reading materials.
