What do do think of this? Yay or nay? Seems doomed to failure based on the experiments so far. If it is successful I could see it as a great way for paralyzed people to walk again, etc.

Well, as long as the volunteers name isn't Abby Normal I think we are good.

I love the idea of it, but lets think for a minute.
Many people who are paralyzed due to an accident, remain in that condition because medical science cannot re-attach, re grow or repair nerves. Nerves are like the body's wiring. They carry electric impulses from one part of the body to another. My brain sends the thought to stand up and my lower muscles get the message and then do it. Broken wires carry no messages, hence paralysis. Regrowing skin is easy, bones not so hard either. Muscles and ligaments can take months to heal, if they heal at all. And the kicker is still the nerves. If we had seen people with spinal injury have their nerves restored already I would be more quick to believe that this could work. Still it would be great to be able to provide better healing for the severely injured.

I agree with you Cliff. It seems the doctor is making a big leap here from the inability to repair nerves, to some successful experiments with mice in nerve repair, to, "let's do this on a person."
Not to mention that none of the head transplants with mice have survived more than a few minutes. It seems pretty crazy. I understand it's the patient's right to offer himself up for this experiment in the hopes of success or of at least learning from it, but it doesn't seem that we're close enough to success to try this out on a human yet.

If the patient knows that he is going to die and be part of valuable research, fine. Who determines whether the research is valuable or not would be the patient and no one else as there is absolutely no chance of survival of this operation at this point in time.
However if said patient has any inclination of surviving this procedure it should not be carried out as it will absolutely fail and the patient will die from having his head removed from his body causing countless complications resulting in inevitable death. While I am no doctor or student of anatomy I believe we all know enough that such a procedure is so multifaceted that the first try has to be a failure and the patient has no chance of survival for any length of time (possibly hours but I believe more like minutes). The best we can hope for is the operation was a success but the patient died. The patient is definitely committing suicide. However in this case he is justifying it with what he feels is scientific discovery and research. Somewhat like an organ donor but also somewhat different. I just feel way to much, way too soon. I wish all those involved the best.

As long as Rosey Grier and Ray Milland aren't involved, I'm good with it.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".
