Hello everyone! I've just joined the forums after being a bit of a lurker. I've been a somewhat self taught magician for the last 4 years or so (having only been taught through books or ordered videos). I really enjoy performing and have even had some luck getting jobs in promotion and bar magic. I've come to a bit of a point that I have realized a need to reach out to other magicians. I really want to get serious in the pursuit and possibility of doing this as a career. Hopefully, my joining SAM and finally registering an account here will enable some chance meetings and genuine friendships with other magicians that will not just be personally beneficial, but maybe even leave a mark on the community itself.
Here's to hope and vision. I'm happy to be here and hope to make others happy that I came. |

Welcome Danny Ocean,
I don't want to be a dream crusher. Magic is a terrific hobby but unless you are a great go getter and have a lot of business savvy, most Magicians are better off as part time performers. You'll meet a lot of "gung ho" folks here touting the "Go For It!" line but even the most famous Magicians you know may not be as financially stable as you think. You will find some good advice about how to try part time first. Self taught used to mean you learned everything on your own, now it means with the help of some of the greatest minds in Magic via Books, and video. Magic has come a long way. Still, I know what you mean, you want contact with other Magicians to share your experiences and ask advice. I lurked for a long time (I think it is prudent to see how a forum is before joining). The Café is better as a member. If you do a search for the town you live in, you may find other Magicians near you. Best of luck DannyOcean. -Mary Mowder |

I'm trying to remain practical about it. If I can even find a regular part time means to perform and earn a little on the side, I'd call it a success. I have a very well paying job. Not trying to leave financial stability to put myself or loved ones in a financial crisis. Magic is just something I really enjoy and will take the opportunity for something should it present itself.
I do appreciate your pragmatic words, though. It's important to be grounded while pursuing goals. |
