Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of designing a new illusion for my personal use in my stage show (which is in the making, I am slowly building illusions, etc). It is a production, but I would like to keep the details of the illusion to myself right now, mostly until I finalize my ideas so my thoughts do not sound disorganized and all out stupid. Here is what I need help with though: I need to build a very deceptive base for the load and do not quite know how to build the type I need. It NEEDS to be square, but would like to make it as small and thin as possible to maybe fit a large assistant in. I would rather be safe than sorry, and make the base big enough to fit a variety of assistants into it. Probably about a 5'8" flexible dancer would be the largest I would produce. The basic help I need is the painting and external design to make it appear nowhere near thick enough to hold a person. Any help/pictures/tips would be a TON of help. I am still an amateur stage performer and have a lot to learn, especially in the illusion area. Thanks, Evan |

I would definitely go with either the Paul Osborne books and blue prints or the Woodbury books, videos or blue prints.

I used to work for a fellow who built his own illusions. He had a big collection of illusion plans and books. He almost never used the dimensions in the plans because they were either too big or too small. He would use the basic designs and make a trial version in either corrugated cardboard or luaun wall paneling.
Once he got the dimensions the way they needed to be, he made the final version. |

Hi Evans,
Use steel channels for the border and yes, buy the Video it helps. Also when you have a bit more money, try to use a laminate finish. I feel it looks better than paint. |

What kind of laminate would that be? Countertop? (Forgive me if that sounds ignorant). I'm not ignorant... just clueless.

Well yes and no. They have this really great lamanite with metallics and cool finishes. Look into a company called chem-metal. They make some really cool stuff.

6 words, R... oh, wait. That's been done
Seriously, Rand's books are gold mines. I frankly recommend them over Paul's work when dealing with base problems. The laminate idea is also superior as trouping can take its toll on paint but be aware it can significantly increase the weight of your piece.
