High!
I was listening the other day the CD recording of "The Logical Disconnect" and even thought the recording is a complete mess one of the things I got out of it is the distinction between "magic" and "mentalism". In fact Bob (RIP) goes out to say that "the rules of magic do not apply to mentalism". Anyways and regardless, I wanted to know your opinion about a mentalist performing in The MAGIC Castle. Isn't this a way to lose all type of credibility in your performing persona (supposing of course that you want some type of credibility)? I love to watch in Youtube some Castle acts. Some are very good indeed.

Bob Cassidy performed in the Magic Castle. So, obviously, he thought it was okay for a mentalist to perform in the Castle. Good enough for me.

It seems to me that mentalists have a hard time getting booked into the Magic Castle.

Mentalism is a very distinct genre of Magic, but it plays by a different set of rules.

The bad thing about performing mentalism at the Castle is it is for a magic audience and magician's.

We have worked the castle...the reason mentalists have a harder time getting booked is because of the unique audience that is the Castle. The Magic Castle crowd is much like a heavily drinking comedy club crowd. They want action, comedy, and fun. They are not in the market for the slow or the cerebral.
Much of mentalism has a slower build than magic, it tends to be more cerebral, and it tends to be not as visual. Everything the Castle is not looking for. The last time we performed there, someone was thrown out every single night...that should give you some idea of the audience. The Castle is about entertaining. Your act, character, and material will speak for itself. After our shows, we had many people ask my wife how she developed her powers. Its not about the venue...its about your act. I watch far too many mentalists worry about coming off as real rather than coming off as entertaining. I will tell you a secret...the money is in the entertaining.

I've seen a number of mentalists perform here and the key in general is being fast paced and energetic (much easier said than done) as well as entertaining. The other challenge many mentalists face is the time constraints for a full show. With all of these things said, the Castle has a strict no recordings rule. The only time there would ever been a recorded performance available is with the proper permissions and consent, thus there aren't many performances widely available. I have however seen a number of mentalists perform here, Maven, Draper, Cloud and Stetson to name a few so mentalists definitely perform here.

Mentalism plays just as strong at the Magic Castle as it does anywhere else if it is performed well.
I think performing in the Castle as a Mentalist can work to your advantage. Many times people come in expecting you to be just another magician, and then they experience "something else", and this can be very strong. I see it all the time. I have done it myself many times. I was there last night with a friend of mine who was performing in the Cellar downstairs. He had a room full of men. Not a single female. And they were all navy seals. I mean, real Navy Seals. I honestly thought he was in big trouble. Nope. He destroyed the Seal team. They were a great crowd, and they were blown away. I like to listen to people as they leave after a show. Almost always I am hearing comments like, "My god that was incredible. That's the best thing I have seen here tonight. That wasn't magic, that was real" and the list goes on. If you are good, it will play very well. "I watch far too many mentalists worry about coming off as real rather than coming off as entertaining." I think the secret is to come off as both if you are a Mentalist. If you aren't playing it as real, I don't think it is Mentalism. That being said, I have no agenda as far as making them believers when they leave. And yes of course we want them to be entertained. That is mission critical. But I do want them leaving not knowing exactly if it were real or not. If they have a question mark over their heads, mission accomplished. And if they leave thinking it was all tricks, that's fine too, as long as they were entertained.

Trying being perceived as real and being entertaining at the same time is possible of course.... the difficult task is the mindset of most mentalists... Jan

"The Castle is about entertaining" - that being said, John Archer would be the prototype of a mentalist for this special venue, wouldn´t he?

Max Maven, Jon Stetson, Bob Cassidy... all have or continue to routinely play the Castle. The Castle is about mystery entertainment.
