Eye of the Idol was made in 1995. So the magnets have been sitting in it for 22 years.
Without looking I'm sure there are older effects with older magnets. So, what's the shelf life of a Tenyo quality magnet? For this conversation let's assume it's been stored at room temperature. Any ideas? Ed |

Neodinium magnets are used sinds the mid 80's, so perhaps Tenyo used them in Eye Of the Idol (they did use a 'regular/old type' of magnet in Mini Morphosis which was released a few years later). If so, they last for decades, so we'll be good for another 40 - 50 years at least.
But even if an older kind of magnet is used, 22 years won't have much influence on their strength a colleague at school (who teaches physics) told me. We have VERY old magnets in the physics lab and they're still perfectly fine! By the way, I have loads of magic tricks using magnets, and I try storing them with some distance from eachother. No idea if that's necessary, but it certainly isn't harmfull. Don't drop or heat your Eye Of the Idol, and you should be fine for years to come Ed |

As Killertweety noted, dropping them and heat are the two biggest reasons why magnets lose strength.

Fascinating: why does dropping a magnet cause it to lose strength?

Magnets being weakened from dropping really only applies to older materials such as magnetic steels and Alnico materials; the mechanism that creates coercivity means that they are susceptible to being demagnetized if enough energy is transmitted through the material via a shock, such as being dropped or hit with a hammer. Modern materials do not suffer this type of problem.

I've experienced that with old toys, but not with Tenyo tricks. Can you be more specific, Ed?

Just worried/thinking that storing our effects with magnets attached or close to each other will degrade the magnets over the years.
Per the other comments above seems I shouldn't worry about it. Thanks all, Ed |

Just asked our physics professor today, you can store your magnets the way you want, even sticking to eachother. So, no worries Ed

An interesting thing to note is I have had 2 matching small old style Alnico horseshoe magnets for over 50 years, They are very thick and wide and come with a wide flat thick steel metal bar they call a keeper stuck to the ends of the magnet. They said to always replace that keeper on the magnet when done to keep it from loosing it's power. I lost the keeper to one shortly after I got it so I never used one on that magnet. I was checking them out one day and noticed the one without the keeper was so weak it hardly picks up anything but the one with the keeper on it all these years is as strong as it ever was. I didn't believe such a thing as a keeper was really necessary but appears it is. You may or may not find this interesting but is a fact at least with these 2 magnets.

Interesting for sure Wizard ... and weird too. I'll bother my colleague again on thursday and ask

Basic Magnet Keeper Info on Wikipedia.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnet_keeper I think on old Tenyo or any other old school Alnico magnets storing them with opposing magnetic poles repelling each other will weaken them for sure as they are very substitutable to stray forces around them.

I'm sooooo confused.

The Keeper thing I have only seen on horseshoe magnets. I would say just to be safe don't store old magnets right next to each other, heat, drop, or smack them with a hammer you will be fine.
