Just learned about a site where Garry Kasparov will be teaching chess lessons on the site masterclass.com
When I visited the site, I found that it wasn't dedicated to the Kasparov lessons, but contains teachings on a variety of topics. Steve Martin teaches comedy, for example. The chess masterclass is "coming soon".
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Here's a gem from the trailer: "It's not about winning or losing, but of course, at the end of the day, it's about winning or losing." For $90, I could recommend an excellent array of chess books in lieu of the course.
"Torture doesn't work" lol
Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

Agreed.
I was wondering what he could teach a beginner, or an intermediate, that they couldn't learn from a variety of sources.

? Got to admit I'm puzzled by the above comments. While I wouldn't pay Derren Brown $90 to teach me the 21 card trick, I'd certainly be interested in what he had to say about magic. On second thought, there's probably a good chance that his teaching of the 21-card trick would teach me more about magic in general than I might imagine.
I would think chess is analogous. Which is not to say that there aren't a lot of excellent ways to invest $90, I just thought that chess folks would be interested in what Kasparov would have to say.

Having watched the trailer, and what's promised, it doesn't seem like a bad way invest $90.
Personally I'd use it for an ICC membership. That way you'd get the opportunity to play as much and as often as you like, which to me is the most important thing to do if you want to improve. They also have a large variety instructional videos. It will be interesting to see what he considers "advanced tactics and strategies." The rest of the site looks interesting, though they seem to be largely classes about things that you either have innate ability, or you don't.

I'm in the middle of two of the Masterclasses. James Patterson on writing and Steve Martin on comedy. I am not being studious with the exercises. I also want to take David Mamet's class on playwrighting and two or three others. I'm seventy years old with a lot of pre-existing conditions but I love learning, what can I say? Since my woman left me I got money to burn. Some people buy houses and cars, I waste money on learning stuff I'll probably never use...and when I'm healthy enough, bridge tournaments!
