Lobo: if you have a moment, I'd appreciate seeing how you would have envisioned the game developing, had I not made the silly errors you mentioned. (I know now what I should have done; I'm interested in what you would have done in response.) Maybe the first 6 - 8 moves each.
Thanks. (Kibitzers should feel free to chime in with their ideas as well; this will be a great learning experience for me.) |

Here's a for instance...at many spots along the way, there are reasonable branches, so the potential variations get pretty numerous quickly.
1. P-K4 (e4)...P-QB4 (c5). (The Sicilian...Fischer's favorite) 2. P-QB3 (c3) (less popular than N(either)-B3, but a sideline that enjoys a reasonable following). 2...P-Q4 (d5) (One of the two main responses, the other being N-KB3 (Nf6) 3. PxP (standard)...QxP (likewise). (exd5...Qxd5) 4. P-Q4...N-KB3 5. N-KB3...B-N5 (Basically, each side would like the other to make the pawn capture. If White does, whites' scented pawn is removed; if black does, white's center pawn is unopposed, at least temporarily, and the recapture gets the QBP out of the way of the knight, preparing to harass the black queen, which is out in the breeze a little early. So both sides make normal developing moves and leave the tension in the position. 6. B-K2...P-K3. ( Be2...e6) 7. O-O...N-B3 (Nc6) 8. B-K3...PxP. (Be3...cxd4) Whites natural developing move puts added pressure on black's QBP, and black would lose a tempo if he developed the dark squared bishop and then white played PxP, forcing a second bishop move to recapture, so black is positionally "forced" to make the capture. White has an isolated pawn, which is a potential weakness in the endgame but generally a strength in he middlegame. White also has more space and an advantage in the center. White should generally try to keep the minor pieces (knights and bishops) on the board; their exchanges reduce the dynamic possibilities that the isolated queen law gives white, and make its weakness (being unable to be defended by other pawns) more apparent, as it is most subject to frontal attack from black's rooks in an ending.

Thanks, Lobo. I'll play that out and ponder it.
Apart from not knowing exactly what a scented [sic] pawn and the isolated queen law [sic] are, I follow your explanation. |

Are we allowed to look at each other's commentary threads and the kibitzer's thread now?

Now comes the best part: the winner and his wife get to treat the loser and his wife to dinner.
I understand that this is a chess tradition. |

Thank you both for a most engrossing contest, plus all the additional comments. And special thanks to Landmark for the visual representations. That helped a lot!
Looking forward to the rematch! |

You are both decidedly NOT allowed to look at the other threads. We said nasty and horrible things about you with complete confidence that you would never read such things. I am already horribly embarrassed.
Ah...nice game, brothers. |

Probably I would have played Nc6...possibly Bf5. If Nc6, I would have played Bf5 before long, then e6.
