You often hear the phrase 'underground magician' and I've started to wonder what that really means. Little known? What underground magicians do we consider masters of their art and what defines them as underground exactly?

Hi Muzz,
I'll give you an example. My teacher is well known among magicians/card guys and has been a Fechter's attendee since the 80's. He also performs for the real world and has made a living in the entertainment industry for 30+ years now... But his name is not plastered on billboards... He has a lot of notebooks, writings etc. that will never see publication and contain tricks, sleights, finesse etc. on all things magic.... Maybe things like this would classify him as underground? not sure..... I remember going to his house and having the opportunity to speak with Richard Turner, just to give you an idea about who he talks "shop" with..... I'm only writing this because you asked a question... In the long run it's not that important... there is more underground magic/magicians buried in print, than you could ever imagine! |

Camron - why don't you give us his name. I'm curious now.
Another name that comes to mind is Derek Delgaudio, he might be going there, but he is still not a "mainstream" magician. So to answer your question: what defines an underground magician? In my opinion, it is someone of noteworthy skill, who is not (yet) wellknown among his peers. |

Can't tell you because he wants to remain underground lol.......
He tells me that he lurks on here from time to time, just to see what people are talking about etc... I don't even know his username... Pretty secretive guy I don't really believe in an underground.. for me and him, it's just having a network of friends that we trust to share info about things we're working on or things that we've come up with etc. Just doesn't go around sharing it online etc. If you met him though and had issues with something, he wouldn't hesitate to help you.... |

Underground magicians are usually amateurs who are well known and respected by famous magicians.

Thanks Nicholas and Rupert for the info. I had the impression that Fulves wanted to compete with Marlo but was not confident enough to come out and perform. Now my thought changed .

Not exactly sure of the definitions. And it may have something to do with the observer. Depends on where you live, and who you know. But, Lance Pierce? Underground or too well known?

Lance has some effects on VanishingInc where you can see him on video performing and explaining them and also attends conventions. Probably not the best example.

Another wonderful coin magician, Mickey Silver was another one that came from the underground with just exceptional ability and creativity not seen in the larger lights or along the regularly accepted pathways of the intelligentsia. Happy about that, as it allows the brilliance to show through from the big, small and all of us.

There was only one "underground man." That was Lou Gallo. In fact Richard Kaufman's book about him was called "Lou Gallo: The Underground Man." Notice the title is *The* underground man not "an" underground man or "one of several underground men." There must be a reason. I used to session with him and Mike most Saturdays in the 1980s. Of course they held the good stuff back. I would expect no less.

"Oldschoolorp" on IG. Real name is Joe.
He is the teacher of Steve Freeman, Bill Malone, Bill Kalush, Ricky Smith and the list goes on. As underground as it gets, probably. He was also very close with Cardini. |
