I’ve never used a stripper deck before but I’ve just bought one to work on an idea of Paul Gordon’s from his recent At the Table lecture. It requires stripping away multiple cards from a small packet, namely five from a packet of ten after they’ve all been shuffled. I usually manage to catch three or four, but almost never all five in my first go. I don’t really know how to to handle a stripper deck properly but my technique I’ve tried is to hold the packet between finger and thumb of my left hand and lightly running my right first and middle finger and thumb down the sides. I’ve also tried just holding each end with a first finger and thumb and pulling in opposite directions but that produces worse results.
Can anyone advise a stripper-deck noobie on the best techniques/grips and suggest anything I might be doing wrong? Many thanks |

That sounds difficult with a small packet like that. I think you've got the right idea, maybe try just with middle fingers and thumbs

Thank you for your reply!
I’m glad to hear that it’s not something most would think straightforward - Gordon talks about it as though it’s something that should be very easy and I’ve been feeling a bit disappointed with myself I’ve not got a good hold on it. I will keep at it though and see if it gets any better, if it does I will report back. Thanks again for your response |

So much to do, so little time . . .

A couple of other things that might be an issue...
Sticky cards are harder to strip so there may be a time an older, more handled deck will mess with you. You also may be squeezing the edges of the cards too hard. Try lightening your grip a bit and see if it helps. |

Made much progress on this thanks to your collective advice!
@alicauchy Having my first finger on the top of the packet, coupled with Bill08’S earlier recommendation for using only my middle finger and thumb along the side, has made a big difference. I don’t quite understand why that positioning is better, but it definitely is, I’m finding it far easier to catch the various cards with my fingers in those positions. @DaveGripenwaldt And the other element which has made my hit rate far better is your advice to lighten my grip. I wasn’t holding the cards in a vice-like grip before but my touch is much lighter now, and again I can actually *feel* the difference it’s making to being able to strip the differing cards. I’m still not getting a 100% success rate but I’d estimate I’m now up to 90+, which is a vast improvement to what I was managing a week ago, and I’m getting more of a feel for what I might doing and the sensations in my fingertips I need. Thank you everyone, mich appreciated |
