Looking for any information about this classic mentalist/hypnotist. Supposedly he was a true master and was capable of non contact mind reading.
I see that there is one very rare book on him, published in the 90s, but it's very hard to find (and expensive). Is anyone else aware of any info published?

There is some info in the Beckmann book on Alexander. It isn't a lot but is in context to Alexander which is interesting.

Thanks for the tip. That book may also be hard to find!
I found this book: https://archive.org/stream/ContactMindRe......mode/2up Which references Newmann throughout.

Last Laugh,
There are brief mentions in: Psychophysiological Thought Reading by Banachek The Charlatan' Handbook by Sid Fleischman The latter states he got his start in show business as an assistant to "Faits the Great" It is also interesting that Newmann performed Add-A-No at the turn of the century. He could be the first the use that methodology. (Thanks for John Riggs for this information) Other info: http://www.geniimagazine.com/magicpedia/Newmann_the_Great Thanks, Sean |

Of course, there's his own 600+ page (somewhat infamous) book, "The Collected Mental Secrets of C.A. George Newmann", by Leo Behnke, published in California in 1990, in a limited edition of 250 copies. It's a pretty amazing resource.

Indeed it is. This book and the House of Mystery (The David Abbott book) are high on the list of books I really want that I'll probably never get...

There's another book on him, just on his life, nothing about his methods, if I remember correctly. I believe it had the word "Pioneer" in the title. It was available on eBay about a month or two ago. To be clear, it's a biography, not his collected works or methods or routines. Certainly nothing like the Behnke book.
I was very much interested in him some time ago, and from what I remember, he was pretty much a "King of the Small Towns" in the mid-west. If I'm correct, I believe he also grew up in a Spiritualist family, or if not, he at least attended Spiritualist churches for a time at a young age. I also know he had one of the largest magic libraries of anyone of his time. And if this is the same performer that I'm thinking of, I also believe he was briefly investigated by the government.
I write and edit text.

"Newman: The Pioneer Mentalist". It's a good book for history, not so much for specificity on his presentations or methods.

Curious why 'infamous'? I labelled it so because this book, much like Burling Hull's equally infamous "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mentalism", is crammed full of secrets that were not the author's to reveal.

Aha, right.
Looks like most (all?) of the books detailing either his life OR his methods are rare and expensive. Too bad!

I guess 'expensive' is relative! Even $360 feel like a lot to me...

Newman was a real worker. His book is a gem if your a serious student. Don’t waste your money if your a Café mentalist.

Newman's collection has been in my libarary and in use for years. The last time I saw it on line it retail offered at $750. I cimmented that whoever got it less at hte time got a bargain!
It has some seminal work in it from other sources that he used in his tent show and career. The moves and directions are well tested -- but you need to remember he was performing before the net and the lingo of twitter and facebook.
